Timing belt inspection. 200

I know I'm about 20K miles over due for a timing belt change. But I'm wondering if a visual inspection would indicate much. There was no chaffing, etc.
Before my daughter drove it to Maryland (about 500 miles one way) it looked ok, and she reports it's doing ok during her stay there. Just want her to be good for the return drive in about a month.
So, if the belt LOOKS good, is it?
I intend on changing just after she gets back here to New England.

    Timing belt REPLACEMENT. 200

I was pretty weary of touching my t-belt, but finally I bit the bullet. Piece of cake, honest! So pleased I did it myself and saved £££, also I ALWAYS carry spare belts and tools in the boot. As others have commented, its just not worth the risk.

    Timing belt inspection. 200

No way would I have my daughter driving around in a vehicle 20k past it's timing belt change interval. When it fails it will go all of a sudden and the car will be an instant door stop. Looking at it tells you very little.

There your daughter is out at 2AM and jump in her car to go back to her home/apartment/dorm/etc. No start. Now she is who knows where in the middle of the night stranded. Probably she gets out of it fine, but maybe not.

Never tell a book (or timing belt) by its cover.....

Evey one I have had fail looked just fine, until I looked at the inside part where it was wrapped round the crankshaft pulley. No teeth = no go.

    At 70K, you're pushing it.

Seems that the conditions that can precipitate shearing are (1) oil leak on belt - which can be seen. (2) Acceleration from idle, faster = worser.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

    Timing belt inspection. 200

I'm at about 75k on my timing belt. Roughly 4 yr. It shows no cracking, and generally looks fine. I had a look about 2 weeks ago because...

I saw pics recently of a HEAVILY crackled t-belt. Looked like it had to be 7-10yr old, maybe original to the '91 that it was on. If it looks cracked, it's likely to fail by stripping teeth off. Friend of mine had one strip teeth. It was low mileage, but about 7yr old. If it's done a lot of miles but isn't really old, it seems like it would break before stripping teeth.

An inspection can also tell you whether it's oily or not, which would be nice to know. It may not give all the answers, but it will rule out some obvious risk factors.
