140 Drive Shaft on 122 120-130 1966

I have recently secured myself a 1968 142s with overdrive to use as a parts car for a couple of project cars. One of the project cars is a 1966 122s with a M40. I would like to put the M41 into the 122. It seems to me that I have read or heard somewhere that the front driveshaft from the 140 will be the correct length to use on the 122 in the M41 installation. Is there any truth to this, or am I just dreaming up a reality that I would derive pleasure from?

Back in high school I put the whole driveshaft from a JY 142E in my 122. I was tired of chewing up the tiny original u-joints in my '63 sedan, wanted the bigger u-joints on the 142 driveshaft. Of course, it went in with the 142e's radiator, engine, M41 trans, rally gauge cluster, seats, rear axle, and gas tank. That junkyard owner really perked up when I pulled into the lot.

Replacing the whole system noe to tail avoided any flange size difficulties. I think I chopped out the original flimsy rubber grommit/peg center support bearing, and used the 142 style rubber doughnut. I trimmed it down slightly, then drilled two holes in the tunnel to bolt in the doughnut's support bracket.

There is truth to that. The front/short part of the driveshaft from a 142 is a bolt on for a 122 driveshaft when converting to an M41. Did it myself.

    I believe that a 140 driveshaft will work, with some cutting, on a 122;
the same of course can be said of the driveshaft *on* the 122. I would
probably use the M41 from the 140 and the driveshaft from the 122. Measure
carefully and take the driveshaft to a driveshaft shop to have it shortened,
    balanced, and the ujoints replaced.

    One word of warning --

Do not drive the 142. If you do, you will abandon all interest in the
    122. You will find that the 142 is, in every possible way, a better car
than the 122 and the 122 will quickly be abandoned.

Fortunately the 142 is a rustbucket needing about $500 of brake work. UNFORTUNATELY, I am also working on a project 144. I would agree that the 140 is a more pleasant road car.

As a daily driver, the newer the better. There is no doubt that cars get objectively better year by year.

As a part time 'fun' car, the older the better. I've owned (at various points) a PV544, a 122 Sedan, a 122 wagon, 2 1800E's, a 145s, and a 145E. And the PV, by a decent margin, is the most fun to drive around for some reason.

I laugh. This has admittedly happened to me... I'd say too much is wrong with my 122 to use it regularly but the 142 is just as messed up and I invariably work on the 142 first while the 122 "waits" in my girlfriend's garage. She likes the look of it, but doesn't like to ride in it.

Pass someone in an Escalade in that junker 142 at 80-smething mph and you'll see how these things can happen.

The crossmember under the m-41 on the 142 is a valuable commodity, by the way.

I got my first 142 when I was 18. Twenty years later I still have one. I'd like a 120 of some sort, but they are a bit hard to find here compared to the 140's.

I've only had the 122 for little over a year. As of now, my take on the applications of each is as follows. The 140 is a great highway cruiser especially the freeway. Here in Iowa there are many situations where it is great to engage the overdrive and fly along. Very practical; very pleasant. The 122 is more fun. Blasting along little country roads absorbing every little character imperfection of the roadway. No power anything. Pure, unadulterated simplicity.

The most fun vehicle I have is a C70. Not the volvo convertible, but
the honda scooter. I use to think that my tercel (or my 122, for that
matter) was the most basic car possible; the sort of vehicle that would
be left on the bottom of a car stew left on the burner too long. Well,
that prize now goes to my honda C70. Dead simple, 100% reliable, slightly
            cranky, and crazy fun.
