I found this website and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't see an email link to e-mail the guy who did this site, so I'm wondering if he's on this board? I'd like to e-mail him. If you know who he is, can you send me an e-mail through my profile? Thanks!

Hey Adam, I just wanted to say thanks for the cool info on the site. With your info, I was able to determine that my car, a 1981 242DL, has the MPG motor and is a California car. However, it has power steering (where your website says most didn't come with power steering) and was sold to the original owner in Dallas, TX back in 1981! So I find it odd that the car ended up in Texas when it was a Cali car. Doesn't matter as I'm having a blast with it. Even though the motor is only about 99 hp or so, I am able to get good torque with it. I do get good gas mileage with it. Thanks again, Roll on!

For the record, I found k-jet.org extremely useful too. Very well done, a valuable resource.
I found myself recently with an '82 GL, made shortly before the switch that year to LH systems. It's been a real pain trying to sort out fuel system problems since the manuals get confusing about the '82 model year but the info on your site helped. Thanks!

yeah i recently got an 82 245 with K-jet in non-running condition. it took me a while to figure out what was up with it. turned out to be wiring and idle air control valve issues.
i think most of the 1982 cars had K-Jet though. out of the 10 or so 1982 4-cyl. cars I've seen (mostly at junkyards), only one of them was LH-Jet.
i have a lot of ideas for things i want to add to the site, but being a full-time grad student, it's pretty difficult to find the time for it all. i still have some more manuals to scan too.

"i think most of the 1982 cars had K-Jet though. out of the 10 or so 1982 4-cyl. cars I've seen (mostly at junkyards), only one of them was LH-Jet."
You're probably right, this is the first '82 I've poked into, it seems to be one of the least documented model years.
The GL I acquired was a steal. $200, runs *perfectly* - needed exhaust, wiper linkage, and rust patching. The rust is all I got left to deal with and dad and I patched most of it up today.
There IS however a lot of noise coming from the main fuel pump. I've decided it's either a bad main pump or bad transfer pump, even though the previous owner replaced both about 5 years ago. In-tank pump was done at dealer with Volvo part, main pump is aftermarket.
At this point I'm thinking (is this possible?) that the in-tank pump is for some reason (Relay?) not receiving enough voltage to supply enough fuel to the main pump to keep it from overworking itself. Oh well, car runs, i'll probably wait till a pump beaks, then I'll KNOW what's wrong.
BTW, the previous owner was the original owner and the guy kept EVERYTHING, including owners manual and some other papers that came with the car. I'd be willing to scan in anything you'd like. Got the premium "Volvosound" stereo book too, I think. Pretty neat, wish the radio had still been with the car.

You can check the voltage it's receiving with your multimeter. It's always a good idea to clean the ground, too.
On mine, I disconnected the fuel line from the in-tank pump at the main pump and put the end of the hose into a clean bucket. Then I ran the in-tank pump to get a general idea of the flow. I can't remember how much it's supposed to pump, but mine was filling up the bucket fast. It was a pretty easy test. No smoking or sparks allowed though.
Also, check the mounting of the main pump to see if metal is vibrating against metal. Sometimes the loud noise is external, caused by poor mounting or missing rubber mounting pads. Bentley (230-2) has a desription of how to safely run both pumps with the engine off. While they are running, get under there and feel out the situation, pushing on the pump and bracket in various directions, etc., to see if the noise lessens. (The switched fused jumper wire Bentley describes is great for testing the flow characteristics of the K-Jet injectors, also.)
Good luck.

Volatge was around 10.5 when I checked it a while back. Seemed a little low.
I tested the in-tank pump the same way as you, btw, and filled half a mayo jar in about 5 seconds.
For my next trick, I'm gonna haul a power supply into the trunk and hook up the in-tank pump direct, so I KNOW it's running and I KNOW it's getting enough voltage. If that fixes my noise I'll know what's up. If not, I'm guessing it's the aftermarket junk main pump going bad. In either case I hope to hell I don't have to open up the gas tank again. What a pain!

Electrical is not my strong area, but 10.5 volts seems like an awful lot of voltage drop. It should be the same as battery voltage, or maybe just a tiny bit lower to allow for a little bit of voltage drop. That's my understanding anyway.

the aftermarket fuel pumps have a bad reputation.
most here wont buy them.

Yeah, I wouldn't either if this one is going bad after about 4 years. OEM pump is about the same price anyway, so why would you skimp on something that crucial?

Thanks for the compliment. It's my son's site. I'll let him know to check your post.
