tie rod up or tie rod down? 444-544

Sorry about what I'm sure is a rather basic question but...

After I left my car (reassembled) on Sunday night, I noticed in my shop manual and parts catalogue that there are several renderings of the PV front end steering assembly. It seems that the early production has the tie rod ends hanging under the steering arms (castle nuts up) and the later production has the tie rod on top (castle nuts down). I can't get to my car right now to look but I have a nagging feeling that I installed the tie rod incorrectly. Can someone verify the correct position on a later model PV? I have a 1967 P210.

    With the nuts on top is how my '63 goes.

    On my car, it would be impossible to get it wrong, there isn't enough clearance under the front part of the frame for the tie rod to fit. Plus, the holes in the arms they fit into are conical, you'd definately know something was wrong as they would only go a very short way in the wrong way.

    You're right, I've seen tie rod ends installed in both positions, too.

    Remember that the shaft with the threaded end is tapered, and should only go into the hole in one direction. If you got them cinched down, they have to be right!

      Thanks. The same thought occured to me as well. You both may have saved me from taking it off only to find it doesn't fit the other way anyway. There's no doubt I got the nuts to go on all the way. In fact the hole for the cotter pin was well exposed. I'll double check before I drive off. The only thing about having the nut up top is that it makes it difficult to use a torque wrench.

        If you have to put a cotter pin through it, getting anywhere close to a torque spec is pure luck. I'd just make it good and tight, pin it and go.

          Isn't it funny how some tech issues just seem to pop up out of nowhere? I mean I've removed and replaced control arms and tie rod ends on old Volvos for years now, and never thought about "up or down". Now it's got me worried!
          On a related note; do the control rods (the outer ones) need to be mounted in only one way, that is; the right HAS to be on the right, and the OUTSIDE joint HAS to be on the outside? With the car on jack stands, things don't always look quite right, and everything changes when the car is back on the ground. Also, can the later style of control rods, the non-grease fitted ones, be used on earlier cars (PV444 and 445s)?
          Here's an installation tip for the control rods which use split pins and castelated nuts. Gently score a line with a hacksaw to match the holes in the threaded mounting studs. This really helps when trying to get the nut to line up to install the split pin. That can drive you nuts if you're not careful! You could probably use a Sharpie, or felt marker, but a shallow cut reflects the light better.

            IIRC, the right has to be on the right, and the outside has to be on the outside. If you had it wrong, it would look wrong.

            The later arms that fit B18-powered cars are shorter than the earlier ones and won't interchange.
