remote rescue, fuel pump 700 1987

Hi all,
My 87 740ti failed on the way home from a day trip yesterday. About 50 miles away from home, it would cut out intermitantly and just for a short time, regaining fire and running normally. It was worse on a long uphill, but made it, low fuel I figured. so I filled her up (only 11.5 gal) and off we go. It goes about 5 miles and stalls completely. Fuel starvation I recon. I check the FPR and it's cliccking, but I put in my spare anyway. I pull the AMM wires, it starts right up. OK, even though it doesn't make sense, I swap in my good 007 spare. It starts and runs normally. 5 more miles, stalls again. No fuel in fuel rail. no spare fuel pump either. call for help. Finally my question, what should I take besides the fuel pumps (both), a new filter, and tools. The car has a fresh hall sensor in distributor, no RPM sensor. Does it have a radio suppression relay? if so, where? I'll be going to get her tomorrow after work, any encouraging words are appreciated.

My 87 TI also had a similar failure, first of all is your tach bouncing as you try to start it? If yes, you probably have spark.
Can you hear the main pump kick in just as you engage the starter, if yes then it might be the RSR relay. Mine have failed twice and I keep a freshly soldered one in the glove box.
Mine is located on the drivers side strut tower, some have two, the other is for a fan relay I think.
Another poster says you can jumper the two larger wires (there are 4 total) and eliminate the relay. Have no experience as of yet however I looked at wiring diagrams and it appears feasible.
Also the connector for the RSR relay may be like mine and is deteriorating so take a jumper wire just in case.

What condition is the engine wiring harness, any crumbling ground wires?

The harness isn't too bad, crumbly wise. The PO had given it some attention and it has a couple of new wires spliced in, I'll check that too. Thanks for the tip on bouncing tach, I recall it did bounce on crank, but my memory.....

      Thanks, Palmer

You have to know whether you're getting spark. Pull the coil wire off the bottom of the dist cap and see if it makes spark when it cranks.

If so, then it's almost certainly on the fuel side of things.

If not, you have to revisit your dist hall sensor, and also think about replacing the coil. If you have a spare, bring it.

    Good luck with it!

Thanks for the response, I'll bring a coil. I am almost certain it's not a spark isuue, when it was starting to go, it was not like an electrical mis-fire.
