95 960 Horn! 900

I am having a problem with the horns on my 95 960 sedan. The horns work intermittantly. When the weather is damp or wet, they work. When it is dry, they do not. While this seems to suggest an electrical connection that is aided by the wet as a conductor, both horns were replaced last September with new.

I recall readong that the connectors on the steering wheel often detoriorate., and that cleaning them is a fix. I also remember that one should take out the fuse for the air bag to avoid it deploying. Beyond this I am not sure what to check or clean.

Any ideas on the cause would be appreciated!

I have to agree with Spook on a couple of things.
Disconnect the battery (I did not when I did my work and had no mishap, but why chance it?) and the damp is an indicator of an external problem, but there are 2 horns and it is odd that both would be impacted unless it is a relay connection- if there is a relay.

My 93 horns sucked from day one which was in 98 when I bought it used. Naturally, they always worked at the dealer when under warranty but for me they were intermittent. I pulled the steering wheel apart and saw the contacts were worn down due to arcing and there was just not enough stroke to make contact anymore. When I saw the big spark at the contact and the way the metal was spattered away I was suprised that so much current was going through the contacts. It would have been a big PITA to tear it down to be able to build up some silver braze to raise the contact so I cheated by popping out what looks like a thick washer that was held into the assembly by two little spot welds. The washer itself had a couple of raised 'dots" on it and I wish I took some pictures as it has been a long time since I did this. Anyway, removing that part gave me just enough stroke so the contacts would contact again and the horn has been working fine for the last 4 or 5 years.

Even though I have a 97 too, I have no idea if they used the same design horn switch as i have not had to get into that part of the 97 (yet).

    Dear 960 Brickster,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. DEATH DANGER WARNING!! Before doing ANY work on the SRS system - especially work involving airbag removal - you MUST disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the battery terminal, and put the clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it. This cuts power to the SRS system. Do NOT put the cable clamp back on the battery terminal, until ALL work has been completed.

A moisture-driven intermittent fault would seem more likely to be external to the passenger cabin. Check the connectors at the horn units. I understand that the horn units are relatively new. However, the contacts may have corroded. If you see corrosion, where the wire enters the connector, that may indicate corrosion inside the wire's insulation. Replacing the connector and coating it with an anti-oxidant will cure the problem.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
