Not sure of your circumstances. Assume you have purchased the car from someone in Charlotte and driving it home. I live in Charlotte, happy to assist if you have any difficulties, tools, parts etc.

Hello David ... I bought the car on e-bay from Tom Baker in Charlotte, he is a Volvo tech and I understand he has a shop in the city, but lives in SC. The car is 100% so not anticipating any problems mechanically. Just looking for a chance to put some faces on some BB faces.... I don't get "south of the border" as frequently as I would like.... and I understand that "Tim Hortons" Coffee shops are starting to make an appearance down there ;-) Nothing like a little taste of home along the way.... otherwise I'll have to wait until I get all the way back to the Great White North to feed my caffeine addiction properly

Tim Horton's - memories of my 2-weeks training in Missauga in March 1995. Almost lost both buns, frozen off.

My trainer and I hit TH's often. Loved the donuts. On your I-95 trip, look for Waffle House. Why? Their coffee is passable, their food is one level below average, but they ALL have the same floor plan (some RR's to right, some to left). So when you need to run like hell for the men's after sitting for hours, no loss of time asking "Where?" since you know in advance where it is. WH signs are ALL the same, look for them a little off the freeway, where the rent is lower than freeway frontage.

I had hoped to see a post from bricksters in DC and CT. Maybe later. Did you post in OPINIONS? Ed Mittenhed in ME, and a few in the NYC area might chime in.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

Driving New to me 780 Turbo from Charlotte NC to Calais Me ...

Hi all ... This is from "On the Road" in Elkton Maryland. The car is GREAT!! As advertised ... only one thing that worries me .... the Cruise doesn't work and this baby REALLY wants to cruise !!!! Somehow it seems that the other occupants of I 95 think that those signs that say Speed Limit 70 really mean 80 ..... and for that matter the ones that say 65 ALSO really mean 80 .... I really cannot say enough GOOD things about Tom Baker of Baker Automotive and Performance in Charlotte, NC he really went not just the extra mile but the extra 100 miles or so to get everything looked after in the way of paperwork on the car. We used it in our running around and he noticed that the car wasn't charging properly ... when we got back to his shop he had the whole charging system gone over and traced the problem to a loose fanbelt. A small thing but sure will save me some hassle on the trip home!!

Mainly all the car needs is some cosmetic work on the interior and a bit of body touchup ... and the usual electrical gremlins sorted out that have crept into the car the last 16 years... all in all I am VERY PLEASED and other that an idiot in a silver Civic that almost ploughed into my rear on the Beltway around DC and another Idiot in a Ford F100 who liked lane hopping the drive has been otherwise uneventful. I'll drop a note when I get home ...

          From the "Road" in Maryland

Tuesday till Friday to get to NS from the Carolinas?
Come on Brett, we usually go from Southbury, CT to Youngs Cove in a '86 745T less than a day with three kids!! We usually leave around 3:00 AM. Granted, it is a long day. You're taking the Princess right?
Enjoy the ride. Route 9 through Maine is always pleasant.
We're about an hour from 95 but if you run into trouble, I'd be happy to help. Shoot me an e-mail if you want.
It's a good year for you, I think the exchange is around 11%, no?
Not going to make it up north this year...I'll miss it. Kids and commitments.
Some day we'll hook up for that Kieth's... My favorite.

The length of time for the drive is set by the boys at US Customs ... figure 12 to 24 hours for FEDEX to get the papers to them for their clearance which is supposed to take 72 hours from the time they get them .... ergo a 4 day delay before I can hit the border .... so planning to just putter along and see a few folks along the way. Oh well, I can also do some shopping too :-) .... I'll keep the Keith's Cold Al ..... ;-)

Just curious why you sent the papers FedEx. They only needed to be faxed to Customs. Once 72 hours has passed and the vehicle has not crossed the border, you can present the original (for the first time) to be stamped. Then to Canada Customs to issue the RIV.

Unfortunately that is no longer the procedure .... according to the Officer I spoke to in Calais, it is necessary to send the originals AND a photocopy by courier. They then time and date stamp it when it arrives and 72 hours from that time you can present your car and get your origional papers back. At that time you can then procede across the border to Canadian Customs and pay the duty owing and from there head for home. Fear not ... I have checked this all out about every possible way that I can and this is the current method that they are requiring .... at least at the Calais Me Customs.

At least the folks in customs on the canadian side there are real friendly.
I bought a car in maine last winter and took it up to New Brunswick for a few days before driving back home in the states. Granted, they did check me over, it did look rather suspicious , a car with temp tags and the back full of parts, but they were very friendly and helpful, had a nice conversation with one fellow.

Now getting back into the states....... I was wondering if they were going to let me back home ( if I had a lick of sense, I would have ticked the US guy off and stayed in Canada :-)

Hey Robert ... from what I understand, those US Customs Guys are really easy to tick off too ...... Ahhh the wonderful reputation of the "Polite" Canadians .... or should that just be "Bland" Canadians ???

Just imported another car only six weeks ago at Peace Bridge (Niagara). I faxed the title, made sure I timed my crossing for daytime when the department is open, and I was through in 6-7 minutes.

If you bring in another car in, check other ports and see if they use the fax method.

It might just be a Calais/Woodstock thing-- they used to be terrible sticklers there-- once in the early 90's my father was charged duty on a half-eaten jar of cocktail olives in his camper after being across for a 48 in ME. We always had better luck at the McAdam crossing...

I have imported several cars at Queenston-Lewiston and found it to be quick and free of hassles, but it has been almost 6 years since I have done it, so I am completely out of date on procedures.
