After almost 10 years it looks like the rear main seal is starting to go on my 97 960 wagon. This is one job I would rather not do. I am leery of going to the dealer on this one as the dealers labor rates are inline with rates for overpaid Boston lawyers. At the same time I would like to find a good independent mechanic that knows Volvo's well, does good work and charges reasonable labor rates.

If anyone can help with recommendations that would be great! Anywhere in the Metro Boston area is fine but the closer to Boston the better.

    Angus -- European Auto on Main St.in Northboro is terrific; mechanic/owner is Chris Carroll. He and his 3 mechanics have done great work at a reasonable price on our two 960's and 940.

    Superior Motors,(978-740-3172), in Salem MA did my rear main for about $100 less than the dealer quote. They have done most of my Volvo's work that I haven't done myself. Good guys that went independent after working at a good dealer for several years.

    '96 965, 16' wheels, Michelin Pilot Sports, rear 18mm bar + Koni, 201 HP cams, 135K. Put 200K on '85 745 TD.

    Dear Angus,

    Good a.m. and may this find you well. A rear main seal (RMS) change can also be done by a transmission specialist. Most of the work consists of removing/replacing the transmission.

    I had an RMS ('93 940) replaced 10K miles ago, by Durabild Transmission (Nashua, NH). They also replaced the transmission tailshaft seal (while it was easy to get at).Both have been fine. The cost was reasonable.

      I would recomend All volvo Also know as Alexanders Volvo in bridgwater the number is 508-378-3602. Ask or Russle. He used to work for Volvo and can build these from the ground up. I know many people that swear by him and do not trust their Volvo to anyone else. His prices are very reasonable and he guareentes his work. Take your car there and You will thank me.     I recall Swenson's in Brookline Village, who are Volvo specialists: may be worth a call.
