Help, again! 120-130

I got that fuel pump replaced which took care of the undercar gas leak. But as of this morning, I have an engine-bay gas leak...

I'm running the original SU's.

Right where the fuel line connects to the first carb, there is a little cover, sandwiched between the rubber fuel line and the body of the carb. The cover has a little dimple, which covers a hole on the outside of the carb. From what I gather, the hole is to allow fuel to escape the carb (in the event of excess pressure?), and the cover is to keep the escaping fuel from spraying all over the place?

Question:

why is fuel coming out of the little hole?

Is the float stuck?

I'm tempted to pull the cover off and fiddle around, but I'm 20 miles from home (at work) and:

a) I don't want some spring-loaded assembly popping out, and
b) I don't have a new gasket to put back on once I pop the cover off, though I believe I have one at home...

thanks for the help!

Glad to return the favour. The little vent is there to prevent the fuel bowls from overflowing. I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and discovered that, in the condition you describe, an entire tank of gas can get you about 70 miles!

Anyway, there is nothing spring loaded in there, just fuel and a float. The needle valve has either given up, or there is a little sediment lodged in it. I replaced the needle valve and reset the float level and still had trouble...so I took the bowl off (not hard) and cleaned everything out, then reattached everything and it's been fine ever since.

This sounds easy, but I think I reset the float level about 12 times (most thought the problem was there), and finally just gave up and took it off for cleaning. Save yourself the trouble and take it off first.

You have to take the jet tube off the bottom of the fuel, bowl and remove a screw or two - all totaled about 1/2 hour.

Should get you down the road.

wow, thanks for the quick reply!

when you say "reset the float level" you mean you simply took the (3-screw) cover off, fiddled with the float a bit 'till it felt like it would do its job and then screwed the thing back together?

I'm tempted to go with the quick fix, get home, and do it right there, where I can retire the car for the night should something go wrong during the more extensive fix.

If you take off both float bowl lids together you can compare the one that is working to the one that's flooding. Both should look alike. Plus you can leave the hose connected between them.
You should be able to reuse the gasket as long as you don't tear it.
After you have the float lids off turn them upside down and hold them at about eye level. The tops of the floats (which now appear to be the bottoms) should be just lower the half way. In other words, if you drew an imaginary line across the top (bottom) of the float then that line should be dipping just a very little below half way. The manuals want you to have them tilt down (again, while upside down) even more. When I go by the manual, however, the bowls tend to flood more often.
I wouldn't drive it with it flooding, on account of the bowls being right over the exhaust pipes.

There you go...that's been my experience as well. The gasket should be fine, and set the float to match what's on the other side. My only other suggestion is to make sure the float does not wobble on the shaft, it should only go up and down. Mine was bent by the ham-fisted previous owner and I had to un-do the previous "repairs".

          Cheers,
          Craig
