Temp Gauge RISES when lights turned on or dimmer turned up 700 1986

Hi All,

On my 6th cluster now and just noticed that the temperature gauge goes up (almost to red) when the lights are turned on and interior gauge lights put to full bright. This is a 1987 Japanese Turbo Cluster in a 1986 GLE (originaly a Swiss Cluster). It seems to work OK, just the Temperature Gauge/Light Issue?

Any pointers appreciated (I could not spot this specific issue in the FAQ's)

Cheers!

Greg

6 clusters??
This sounds more like an alternator/ground issue.

I think you are on to something. The Alternator only shows 11.7 V between +ve (fat red) and -ve ground (any ground, block, alt casing, or frame). I recall being told by a tow truck some time ago the alternator was weak (should have followed up then). Is a rebuilt alternator next step, or are there any other checks to perform?

This alternator is likely original from 1986, so it doesn't owe us anything :>)

Thanks!

I should follow-up on the Alterntor as the new 'Turbo Cluster' is giving a really low Voltage reading on the gauge (JUST above the red). Maybe this is what stopped the last cluster from allowing the Odometer to advance (the speedo was working so the sending unit was OK).

Thanks!
