Jumping speedo 140-160 1974

Hi,
Wnodering if somebody have experienced this problem. The needle on my speedo starts jumping above about 45 mph. I just replaced the speedo cable taking for granted it was the problem. It didn't make a difference. Is it possible to the outlet from the transmission is causing this? I was careful to route the new cable the same way as the old with no sharp bends.

Thanks,

Kåre

When my speedometer needle (on a 1974 145) was jumping, a Volvo mechanic wouldn't look at it. He was certain it was the speedometer itself. I took it to an instrument shop where it was cleaned and calibrated.

Its probably the speedo meter itself. Not sure how to fix it. On my 74 144, I replaced it with one from a 76 244. Be careful of the markings at the bottom of the speedo meter face. They have different ratios and the readings might vary slightly. If I am not mistaken, one is 1.03(usually found on manuals), and the other is 0.98(usually auto).

My speedo says 1.03 and I also just checked the rear axle and it says (if I read it correctly) ratio 4,10. My odometer doesn't work either, so maybe the speedo is due for an overhaul.
The reason I thought it was the speedo cable is that I once had this identical problem on a 71 142 and the new cable fixed the problem then (25 years ago).
I'll take out the speedo and see if I can find something obvious. Does anyone know where I can get a new gear for the odometer? I thought I read somewhere that somebody makes these gears, at least for the 240?

Could be the speedo cable. When they start to fray, the reading foes erratic. Happened to me also.

Here's the link. Should work with you speedo too, since the earlier 244s had the same one.

It looks like your 74 144 is quite similar to mine. Mine originally was also Glacier White, 1.03 speedo and 4.10 rear end, with the M40. Except that being a Euro edition, mine came with a single ZS, yours is FI.

I replaced my speedo from a 244 with the 0.98 ratio. Works well, but if you are going 50mph, it will register 45, and so on. As expected, the odometer quit few months ago, the prime suspect being that pesky plastic gear.
