940 AC DIY questions 900 1993

Just got a quote for $950 to replace my leaking AC condenser, pressure switches and accumulator. After realizing I can get everything myself for around $250, I want to take a shot at it. The FAQ has a lot of useful info, but no details about the number and size of O-rings in the system (134-a). I'd also like to add a VOV while I'm in there, but can't seem to find one for sale online. Could someone point me in the right direction? Many thanks!

NAPA carries the VOV about $35 if in a hot climate, make sure to get the extreme climate 105 deg + vov

    Dear benfingland,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. You can get all needed "O" rings from www.fcpgroton.com. Call up and ask for Nick Bauer. He'll make sure you have all needed items.

Once you've re-assembled the system, you'll need to vacuum it down, before re-charging it. The vacuuming: (a) removes any water vapor and (b) checks for leaks, as if it will not hold a vacuum, there's surely a leak.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

Thanks for the info, Spook. I hadn't thought about the vacuum issue. I'll try to rent a vacuum pump so I can get the job done right!

Does anyone have experience with those vacuum pumps sold on eBay?

I've got one of those (well, painted red but otherwise identical looking) and I've done a dozen or more cars with it. Not quite as nice as a lab-grade vacuum pump, but for $20 or so I can't complain. Do make sure you've got a compressor that's up to the job, they use quite a lot of air. When I only had a small 8 gallon compressor getting a decent vacuum meant closing the valve occasionally to let the compressor recharge. You do realize that you will also need hoses and ideally a gage manifold? A worthwhile investment by the way, those will last you a lifetime (or as long as we can get R134a, whichever comes first).

On the O-ring question: you can get assortment packs for a few bucks. Get a couple of those packs and you'll be able to pick the rings you need.

          Bram

You can get what is probably an identical unit from Harbor Freight for about the same price. At least then if you're not satisfied, you could return it.
