The Flushing of America 900

Transmission flushes have been a hot topic around here for a while so I think this article is relevant to all the 960 owners out there trying to decide between draining the transmission themselves or going to a mechanic for a professional "flush machine". Happy reading.

    Dear Justin,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Interesting read. I had no idea, so many committed sins of the flush.

    Yours faithfully,

Hey, what about flushing the old air from the tires and refilling with fresh new air. Perhaps it could be treated and dried before it is put in.

A good read. Thanks for the info. I'll be flushing my rear diff. next.

This is good advice: the overflushing is a problem. But not of brake fluid: Volvo's two-year recommendation is a good one for keeping the system clean and rust-free.

Agreed on the brake fluid. Also I want to stress that I am not advocating Volvo's lifetime fluid advice for transmission, differential or coolant. All three of these must be changed periodically. But the benefits of a flushing machine over a simple drain and refill is beyond me. Also remember that a transmission flush machine won't clean the magnets in the bottom of the pan.

But the benefits of a flushing machine over a simple drain and refill is beyond me.

The simple drain and refill accounts for maybe 2 1/2 quarts of the total 7+ quart capacity of the AW70/71, yielding a sludgy dilution rather than the clean, fresh result that flushing provides.

Anything on the magnets is out of harm's way. And I never found anything on the "filter" screen when I used to drop the pan. Which may be why Volvo issued the following TSB:

        TSB 17106
        Dec 1990

        "ATF filter cleaning deleted"

        for 200/700/900
for all those AW 70/70l/71/72L transmissions
        and for ZFHP22
        (Does NOT apply to BW*)

"It is NO LONGER REQUIRED [capitalized in original] to clean and inspect the Automatic Transmission Filter..."

Good story. Thanks for spotting it and putting it here.

Tell all friends, Volvo-owners or not.

After being a several-year BB habitue, I know sooo much more about "To flush or not to flush" - that it is no longer a question.

    Regards,

    Bob
