Distributor rotor impacting contacts

I'm having a problem with the rotor impacting the contacts in the distributor... i've had this going on for some time and i've tried a lot to keep the cap inline with the spin of the rotor but it won't stay put - even with some RTV it moves or tilts... i'm due for a new one anyway but this is NOT the first one - previously i've blown up one rotor while taking off pretty darn fast - I've spun the idler gear to check for backlash or ANY play what so ever - none...

I'm a young buck in this rink and my first cars were Distributorless Quad 4 HO's from 2 Grand Am's ( awesome engine ) so my experience in tinkering with idler gears and distributors is limited

    Distributor rotor impacting contacts

As long as the distributor cap is properly installed, the only way I can see the rotor hitting the inside terminals of the cap is for the distributor shaft bushings to be worn out. With the cap off, try to move the shaft from side to side. It shouldn't move.

I've only seen this once before and that was on a Ford V8 in an early Mustang. This distributor used points and there was no way to get the point setting correct. We replaced the distributor and all was well. On the Volvo, you may be able to get a rebuilt or go with a salvaged one. I've had a number of the Volvo engines and have never had to do a thing with any of the distributors.

    Goog luck to you!
