My 164s mechanic called today with great news. The wiring to the engine coolant temp sensor had broken in two places, causing flooding shortly after start. It was not the ECU or the MAP sensor, thanks anyway Balu. I will keep the extras for spares unless someone else needs them.
He did find another problem, however. Inside the distributer is a gizmo (not the mechanics words) which is broken. A single green wire attaches to the distributer from the outside and goes right through the housing. The green wire has a wire inside a wire??? Does anyone know what this part is? And, if so, any word on where I can get it? Do I have to replace the entire distributer? Please help.

That would be the condensator. A cylinder shaped whatchamacallit mounted on the outside of the distributor. It connects to the breaker on the inside, and to the coil on the outside.

Don't you hate it when you hit the return key to get to the message body?
The mechanic is going to replace the shielded wire with 2 wires, a la 240. Should fix it for a long time.
I am going to reccomend this garage in the SHOPS forum, because he does know his 240/740 engines. And now he knows a 164F.

No! You don't have to replace the distributor!
If you have the 1975 electronic ignition system there are two connections
to the distributor (not counting the cap). In the bottom are triggering points
that actuate the injectors in groups of 3. They are connected by a connector
that goes in at a near-vertical angle in the lower part of the distributor and
has 3 wires in it.
Nearer the top of the distributor is the connector for the reluctor, which
in an electronic system does what the points would do in a mechanical system.
Usually these wires are not shielded but on the 164 (at least on mine) it
seems to be, and has a slightly different connector than other Volvo electronic
systems of similar age. This wire is crucial to the ignition but can probably
be fixed with a modicum of electrician skills. The connector for the shielded
wire unplugs from the distributor but is held plugged in by a small steel
bracket affixed to the side of the distributor with a screw. With care the
tiny spade connectors can be taken out of the plug and reused and the shielded
cable can be replaced or repaired. My guess is that it could be replaced with
two separate wires like the 4 cylinder cars have, but it might be better to go
back with shielded wire, which is available from Radio shack or the like.
Or maybe Volvo or Bosch could sell you a new wire......

I picked up the Grand Dame today. He charged me for 3 hours of labor, which I considered reasonable. Electrical problems are hard to fix, especially when the 35 year old wires are broken in mustiple places.
It was raining and when I started the car and it ran rough. I attributed it to sitting for a month and not liking the humidity. 14.1 miles later, I pulled into my garage, cussing up a blue streak. She soulded like it was only running on 4 cylinders and the idle speed was at 500rpm, a little less when in gear and stopped. It cruised nicely at 50, but 0--50 was about 60 seconds.
So I let the engine cool and pulled the plugs. #1 was dirty(black), #2 was clean, #3 was dirty, #4-6 were clean. That didn't make sense. I checked the 3 wire connector to the distributer and those were OK, besides, had this been the problem, I would have guessed #5 would not have worked either.
The cap to the distributer wasn't on correctly! When I turned it about 1/4 inch, it clicked into place. Even without taking the cap off (tomorrow) I know that things are going to be messy inside. I started the car again and she runs better, but I bet the contacts inside the cap are going to be all messed up. On Monday I will get a new cap and rotor.
Dang mechanics! I don't get paid to mess up my car when I do something stupid. These guys are supposed to know what they are doing. Especially when I have to pay for it.

It should be fine inside the cap, just scrap away any corrosion & spend that money on some plug leads instead.

Correct again. When I pulled off the cap, no damage done to the cap or rotor. Plugs, cap, rotor, and wires are all new, less than 500miles. The injectors, 1 and 3, were not plugged in!
But now, there is another small problem. I created a new thread for that.

The machanic said it was the shielded wire, and it broke right where it enters the distributer. This is also why the car died when I put it in reverse. The torque moved the engine just enough to put stress on the wire to cause a break and the engine died.
He is going to modify it to use the two wire system and use silicone to plug the hole in the side of the distributer.
