Wheel bearings.. kit? reuse seal? SKF/Scantech? 700

Ok, so I'm fairly sure the front wheel bearings on my car are shot, they hum loudly, the brakes vibrate under light braking and less under harder braking. Plus my mechanic with like 15-20 years experience said he has no doubt, and I trust him pretty well.

Anyway, I've been hunting around and I know I have a separate hub and rotor and that means the hub is serviceable. So.. I seem to find the bearings for 50-85$ and I expected a combined cost of maybe 70$.. What's the deal? I've been all over my sources that have everything else cheap. Also many places list the 30$ kit for single piece hubs as being for the two piece and that caused me some problems. I was looking for a kit because I'd like a new cotter pin and a new seal won't hurt.

Does anyone know where exactly to find these items for less?
I've noticed a few negative comments about ScanTech items, but it appears nobody else makes these besides SKF/Autozone... Any info?

Thanks,
Will

Wheel bearings.. kit? reuse seal? SKF/Scantech? 700

Here is what I see, the early 700's came with one piece hub and rotor assemblies and were changed up to seperate hub and rotor assemblies when the discs were replaced. If you were changing front wheel bearings on this car it probably would not matter a great deal because you would pound the new races into the old hub, regardless of whether the hub and rotor were one piece or two. Now if you are replacing an original rotor then you would need to upgrade to the two piece hub and rotor assembly. Boy did I do a shit pot load of those change-ups back in the day. Now when you get into the later cars like your '90 year model vehicle they run a sealed bearing on a straight (as in not tapered) spindle. If you need bearings you have to purchase a hub/bearing assembly. None of my vendors carry just the bearing that you would need to press in and out of the existing hub. Best prices? Everyone has SKF, which really is what you want, for $110.00 and up with a list price of around $330.00 and I have one vendor that carries Meyle for about $77.00. I would spend the extra money and get the factory SKF stuff and be done with it. I'm glad that you wanted to only spend $70.00 on this but what you want to spend typically has zero bearing on what it really costs.

The correct hubs for your car should be 271644 if it has ABS.

    Happy Hunting

That bites... But I'm not sure I still have the original hubs. My parents bought my brick from a shop that has some odd parts-sharing practices and I think that it might have the older style hub... maybe. Would you know where a part number could be found on this particular hub?

Furthermore, I think it's BS to have a sealed hub and If I've got the sealed hubs, I'd rather swap to an older hub (half price weekend at PickNPull tomorrow) and buy new bearings for them...
But are the two compatible? Swapping them sounds like it could take quite a while.

      ***EDIT***
Could someone please post a picture of the non-serviceable hub or the serviceable?
      That would be awesome.

Here is the problem with that, the sealed bearing style hubs use a straight spindle and the tapered roller bearings of course use a tapered spindle. The spindle is part of the strut housing assembly so now you are looking at replacing entire strut housing assemblies so you can go with the earlier cheaper wheel bearings. If this is a money saving venture I would have to say that you are not saving much money at this point now are you? Yeah, I know, it blows but it is what it is.

          Poooooooooop.

That really sucks, but I suspected it might happen. Do you have any pictures or know where I can find the model no on the hub?
