High brakelight intermittent failure 200 1990

The high brake light on my '90 240DL Wagon fails intermittently. I've tried everything I can think of, including making sure the socket is tight and slathering everything up with dielectric grease. When I tighten the contacts in the socket, it solves the problem, but only for a few weeks, then it goes intermittent again for a few weeks, then it fails, then I bend in the contacts in the socket again, then the light works again, and cycle starts over.

Any ideas?

Could be the dreaded wiring harness on wagons is starting to fray. Check your license plate lights, rear defogger, windshield wiper, as well. There are two harnesses, one running through each chrome tailgate hinge. Search this forum for details on repair/replace and where to purchase.

If all above is in working order except the CHMTL and you worked on the socket did you change the bulb ? I have had a bad filament give an intermittent problem. Let the board know once you determine the problem.

Both harnesses are recent. That's a great suggestion about the filament itself, though. It occurs to me that I have run into the problem before in which the filament in a bulb was actually broken, but would make intermittent contact, actually lighting the bulb. If you gave it a good jostle, though, it would lose contact and die. I'll check and re-post.
