No rear lights 900 1995

Just picked up a 1995 Volvo 960 SW.

Just a few problems.

#1 No stop lights. Checked fuses - okay.

#2 No tail lights. Did not find applicable fuse.

I am actually looking for an electrical diagram with the wiring path for body lights , etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Go here for fuse and bulb out sensor(technically speaking it is not a relay) info.

Went to that site, but didn't see any reference to the rear light relay subject.

Thank for the help.

There is no relay for the rear lights, there is however a bulb out sensor or detector, it is NOT a relay as commonly thought. It's location is shown at the link I gave you as are all of the fuses for the various rear lights. The bulb out sensor is not likely to cause outage of both brake and running lights at the same time. You may find on your 95 that the bulb out sensor is located in the left trunk area.

Are all rear running lights and brake lights left and right including the 3rd brake light really out as you stated? That would be most strange and unusual as they are on separate fuses and separately wired. What about license plate lights and back up lights. On some years of the 960/S series all rear lighting shared a common ground, not sure about your year.

Tag light works. Back up lights work. Rear turn signals work. Tail lights and brake lights do not work. Tyhe site you sent me is an index of subjects. I didn't find an applicable subject heading.

Hello. It is the relay for your light out indicator. It is located in the left rear above the small panel to the floor. in the back. Most times the panel above the wheel well in the left side needs to be removed to get good pull on the electrical connector. Pauli

I found a relay in the general area you mentioned in your reply to my post about brake lights and taillights out. It is identified by K204 on the top side part # 9128136. Could this be the culprit?

Thank You

Well. I feel stupid now. The relay I grabbed is the Intermittent wipers relay. Does this relay look like the standard generic relay or is it a module? I found a module back there.

Many thanks Paulii. I will go in there at my earliest opportunity. It makes sense, that since the window was blown out by the storm, rain could have soaked the relay and socket rendering it dysfunctional. Great help.

I am not familiar with the 960's. However, in the 740/940 series cars if you have no brake lights (including the third) and the fuse and switch are functional it is usually the bulb out sensor relay. Pulling the round red cover off and examining under a strong light with a magnifying glass will usually allow you to see a bad solder joint. Simply resolder the broken joint and you will usually have brake lights again.

With the added absense of tail lights this advice may in fact be useless and I am sorry I can not provide any more help. Aren't the fuses and their location identified in the owner's manual or on the back of the ashtray as in the earlier cars?

I have no rear break light at all. Where is the bulb out relay sensor on a 94 940 wagon? Any help would be nice.

I am not familiar with the 940's. If they are like the 740's, and many times they are, the bulb out relay would be under the ashtry in front of the center console.

The relay is bright red and round. A broken solder joint may be evident under strong light with the aid of a magnifying glass.
