1990 240 DL wagon speedometer problems 200

hi all,
changed out my ignition switch and while doing so I removed the front gauge panel which includes the speedometer. It was working just dandy before removal. once I reinstalled it it would bounce or go haywire while I drove. so i took it back out and looked it over. all there really is, is electrical wires that connect to the back of the panel so I just removed them all and reinstalled them. now it doesn't pick anything up. Any clues? all my other gauges seem to work just fine. unfortunately now I have to get the car inspected , and it wont pass with out this gauge working.

I hope you did not find a red/white wire (for a tachometer) and plug it in anywhere but at the tach. That will fry things good, so they say. After that, I would have a look at the connectors and plugs. If you did not take the speedo out of the cluster, it is not a question of the little pins there.

well i'll have to check , all the other gauges seem to work fine.
If i remegber coeerctly there is only 3 wire plugs a cirle plug and a half cirle plug that goes in at the back .
the 2 wire plugs can fit at 1 spot only the 3rd wire only fits in teh lower corner and the circle of wires and the half cirle of wires is only at 1 spot as well. the only thing I tried was switching the two wires that did nothing for me.

The speedo connection is a right-angle 3-wire connector, that plugs directly to the back of the speedo gauge.

If it's come loose, or you missed it reconnecting, it probably just fell behind the rest. With the cluster out, or your hand up in the back of it, this wire joins all the other cluster wires just below the center of the instrument cluster, as they all come out of one big taped-together bundle.

As noted, if you DO NOT have a tach, the white/red stripe wire does not connect to anything- just leave it hanging.

It's unlikely that you killed both the speedometer and odometer in one operation, though they do receive signal from one source. Internally, though they're like 2 different instruments.

My own 87, has a blue wire going to the double terminal just to the right of the speedometer, and an orange or red/yellow wire to the lower right single terminal, and no, I don't know what those two are for off hand...

The circle and half circle obviously can't go on any other way.
        Good luck with it!

I've had my cluster(s) out so many times I've lost count. That's '86, 89, and 90 models. I mostly have had to get them out to do a temp compensator board bypass "operation".

True about the red and white tachometer wire. It's fed directly from the coil, I'm told, and carries high voltage pulses. I blew up a cluster myself, by hooking up that wire by mistake. Smoke in the cabin, not very nice and kinda embarrassing. Every time I start a new electrical modification project, my wife reminds me of the time I blew up the cluster and simultaneously disabled the car. OK, enough of that. Memory lane.

There's a double-spade male connector near top of cluster; if looking at rear of cluster it's jus to the left of the speedometer (towards center of car). This takes the (single) orange wire from cruise control, if you have it. If no CC and cluster never messed with, there's likely a clear plastic protector over the two spade terminals.

The other single-wire lead goes to the lower corner of cluster, on end of cluster closer to center of car. If I recall correctly this is yellow and orange.

Lastly, there is a sort of ribbon wire going across the top of the rear of the speedometer assembly area. Cluster has to be out of the dash for you to get at this one. It's about 3 inches long. This is a fuse. Is attached with a screw at each end. If kinked or whatever, it might not pass current. Best to test with your favorite electrical tester.

        Good luck!

          damn ,
I had the red white connected to the place where the cruise control connect to , along withthe cruise control wire.

So my guess here is that I fried it?

guess its time to go shopping at the junk yard.
