960 broken gearbox (self-inflicted :-( ) 900 1995

I'm afraid this is probably a story of my own stupid fault, but any advice would be appreciated...

My 1995 965 had sat for quite a long time without being used. When I went to start moving it, it was a little sluggish moving off, presumably as the brakes had siezed slightly. I was being a bit impatient and thought I'd just run the rust off by moving it a bit until it got going. Big mistake; I think I over-torqued the gearbox and suddenly I ended up with no forward gears.

Starting from cold and putting the box in to a forward gear (D, L, 3 or switching to W) yields no movement. Applying a little power causes the dashboard arrow and WSE lights to flash (overheating the fluid?). Reverse is still fine. I've not had chance to get the OBD codes from it yet; I'll look tomorrow. There was certainly enough ATF in there a few months ago, but I didn't check before I stormed off cursing today. The box was a reconn about 20k ago (after it got pumped full of coolant).

So I reckon I've probably striped a clutch pack or brake band (do the NW30s have brake bands?). The car's not worth enough to justify a new box, and re-conn. would be a push; probably only viable if I remove the box myself.

After I've checked the level and condition of the ATF, are there any more things I should check before pulling the box?

If I go ahead with removing it, and given that with the budget I've got the car is almost scrap if it needs a £500 reconn, is there anything I can conceivably do myself to narrow-down or fix the problem? I've tackled most jobs in the past, but I've no experience with auto boxes.

Does anyone know enough about these boxes to tell me what component I've likely broken so that I can mention it when getting a quote?

Many thanks for your help (and yes, I'm aware I'm a clown for breaking it)

Jon

Hello. I have been in the same boat. I have found that if you clean all the connections, including taking apart the pnp and cleaning it might cure the problem, however, a bad strain on this transmission sometimes breaks the rear sprag. The valve body also has a tendency to stick when it sits for a long time. You can clean the valve body and the slide valve, but it is not for the faint of heart, lots of little parts and it must be put back together with all the parts in the right places for it to work again. This transmission runs about 350 to 500 in the local salvage yards. When picking one, make sure the fluid is clean as possible to get the best results for long life. Pauli

No expert on these cars but it seems unlikely you could detroy a gearbox in such a short time. The engine doesn't really put out much torque at low rpm. I mean if you drove it with this load on it for 10 minutes then maybe I could see it. I'd guess it wasn't the brakes holding it back intially but some tranny problem. Maybe the rebuild wasn't so good. maybe the linkage is broken, maybe it's the PNP switch (know nothing on that myself).
Take a closer look I think.

    Dear Jon,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. The Aisin-Warner transmissions are pretty robust. They often outlast the cars, in which they live. Thus, you're probably better off to go to a salvage yard, and try to find a replacement unit there, than to try to fix one with internal damage. The labour cost/hour is so steep for repairs, that a good unit from a salvage yard is the cost-effective solution.

That said, it's best to find a yard, that will let you choose the donor car. If you see a "low miles/Km car", pull the trans dip stick. Clear, rosy fluid is a good sign. Brown, black, or orange fluid is a bad sign (old and/or dirty and/or burned, etc.). Watery fluid is another bad sign: badly overheated.

A good trans shop should not want a fortune to flush the tranny and put it in. After 1000 miles / 1,500 Km, have it re-flushed with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATf, and you should have many happy miles ahead.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

It could be as simple as a PNP switch- not that it's a simple replacement but better than a whole gearbox.

See the FAQ for more information.

These transmissions also like fresh fluid every 25-30K miles, so do that no matter what.
