How to service wheel bearings 200 1986

I was looking for a good write up on servicing my front wheel bearings but couldn't find one, and Bentley doesn't cover it well. What I am looking for is; how to clean(what type of solvent) and determine if they need to be relaced, how to pack and what type of grease (is there synthetic)and how much to use, and how to properly adjust/torque the nut.
Thanks,
Michael

Here's a lengthy post with part numbers, etc. that details front wheel bearing written by Fitz Fitzgerald :

The main fault I find in the Bentley write up is on 770-2 (Step6, Fig.3), where I have never needed that tool as shown. The inner bearing always comes right off with the hub for me. I think the rest of it is pretty good, and that it will become clearer as you do the job.

I hand-pack the bearings, putting a gob of grease on the heel of one hand, and forcing the bearing down into the edge of the gob with the other hand (sort of a wiping motion), until the fresh grease starts to come out of the upper side. Then rotate the bearing slightly to a new position and repeat, working your way around. Yes -- it's messy. But it works for me.

The best way to clean them is to use a degreasing machine or parts cleaner. I myself only use gasoline to wash thm out, it works very well. To test them just give them a spin. After you clean them spin the bearing on your fingers and feel for any roughness or bumps as they turn. The bumps indicate a flat spot on one of the roller bearings. If they spin freely and smoothly you should be ok. As for packing there are many methods. i have sen people take a glob of greese and put it in their hand and then sort of slap the bearing into the greese. I myself use a bearing packer available from any parts store for about 5 dollars. You put the bearing in the device and then use a greese gun to apply the grease. Remember that the object is to push greese from side of the bearing to the other passing through the rollers inside the housing. The bearing will tight and hard to spin when done correctly. As for the torque part it is covered in every manual I have ever seen. Tighten the bearing as you are turning the rotor until it is fairly tight and the rotor is hard to turn, back off one turn then retighten it by hand until it stops. Remember you are using your hands to tighten it and not a wrench. if you must use a wrench then tighten it until it just starts to have some resistance. your object is to keep the bearing from having any side to side or top to bottom play, NOT to tighten the bearing as you would a bolt or nut. Hope it helps..

These taper roller bearings are supposed to have a bit of play. You tighten the bearing gradually turning the hub to settle it nicely, Volvo actually have a torque value for this, but you can do it by feel. You then loosen the nut and you should be able to JUST turn the washer under the nut with your fingers. The split pin then stops the nut from coming loose.

      Regards

      Pete

        Pete,

The '86 has the integrated nut/washer, so a torque wrench is advised. At least for the initial tightening. I think the type you're referring to changed between '81 and '82 (different bearings too).

Just to add a couple points. Its important to install the bearings in their orginal locations. New seals are cheap and it doesn't hurt to change them if in doubt. Always use a new cotter pin.
