generator light 122 goes red, not all the time 120-130 1962

I have a 1962 122 with a b20b engine, which has an alternator. On ocasion the generator light will come on. It comes on when I put on the signal light, the heater motor or the windshield wipers. It is not affected by headlights, or break lights. When the light comes on it is full red, and the signal , heater and wipers will not work. Later the problem disapears for a few days, then it happens again. I imagine this is caused by a loose wire shorting out, but I've no idea where to look for it. Any ideas??

zympano;

Right off the bat, those symptoms sound like fuseblock (possibly Fuse1) issues...ACZP time!

If it's one of my upgrades, done per the instructions, use the troubleshooting info included with the kit...if someone elses, consult them, or figure it out...pay particular attention to other than stock wiring...

(Suggested reading on stock AMP indicator at: http://www.sw-em.com/AMP_Indicator_ON.htm).

Shayne;

Note: If the car has been changed to an alt., the AMP indicator no longer functions as originally.

Thanks for the mention!

Cheers

When the wiper, heater fan, and fuel gauge do not work, it is a top fuse issue (probaly no brake lites either!).
Be sure your top fuse makes good connection and that there is no play on the rivet that holds the inboard and outboard tabs together.
IPD has NEW fuse boxes, #192228...Swedish Embassy has re-built, better-than-new fuseboxes.
Also check the red wires on your wiper switch and the red wires on the fuel gauge to be sure they are tight-best to disconnect the battery for this procedure.
Mild glowing of the AMP lite is normal for these models and should not have any adverse affects.
Best,
Shayne.

After making the conversion to alternator from generator my AMP light comes on from time to time, but only when I turn everything on. Even then it's not fully lit.

Any idea how many amps your alternator is rated for? It is new or rebuilt? Also, what kind/brand/size voltage regulator are you using?

You do have an alternator now, not the stock
generator??? Just clarifying!

I guess the reason I ask is because I didn't hook
anything back up to my generator light once I made the
conversion. I have heard others have a functioning light
but, for me, never seeing that light lit again has been
very nice...ha ha ha!

Karl;

I have the feeling you might have been pretty smug with yourself for never hearing that pesky smoke detector EVER again after removing its battery...

Hey Ron,
I was one that just jumped in with both feet not
fully understanding what he was doing. I knew how
the alternator worked so I just hooked it up according
to the basic wiring instructions. I really have never
known, until this thread,that I could incorporate the guage
into the loop so it works. I think if I had at the time I
would have done so.
I am very new at this as the last engine
I really worked on was a Chevy small block
in 1983.

I am having fun however and my son is showing interest
as he is now the owner of a 122s 4 door sedan.
I am sure I will pay the price someday for bypassing the
light. I have much to learn, and that is why I come to you all.

Thanks as always guys!
It's great that there is a site like this where people are
so casual about sharing their knowledge.

Karl
