Down in Volvo country today (South Surrey, about 40 mins South of Vancouver) and passed by a 1991 blue 4dr auto 240 DL(?) with For Sale sign.
Lists all types of goodies: new tires, maintenance records, 4 wh disk brakes, etc ... and Floor mats! Was Sweden famous for super-durable floor mats..? I thought it was an odd thing to put a list of features.
$2900CDN ($2400USD) and 311K km or ~195K miles. I might have been interested if it was a 5sp.

I have the hard rubber floor matts it was probably (hopefully) referring to them, and I love them. They're not the most common thing, but knowing what decades of damp carpet can do to a car's floors, I'd say the're about the best thing since the alternator. I'd advertise them if I ever sold my car (though I wouldn't make a big deal about the four-wheel disk brakes).

I agree that that's a weird addition to mention on a For Sale sign, but I agree with the other posters that the floor mats are worth it.
I used to have some semi-matching carpeted floor mats that I *thought* were some sort of OEM mats, but I finally figured out that the OEM mats were those hard plastic ones. I think I found a set on eBay a number of months ago for around $70, and I haven't looked back since. They are absolutely wonderful when your shoes are wet or muddy, and they show no signs of falling apart any time soon, even though they're at least 13 years old. They're nothing flashy, but they're built to Volvo quality standards and therefore great!

There are OEM carpet ones as well, they say Volvo on them. The hard plastic ones were an upgrade. I bought mine used like you, and they were worth every penny.
Anyone know what the original cost of the plastic floormat option was?

IIRC about $150 CDN in 1982... I'll check the original bill of sale sometime for my 245. The FM radio option was exorbitantly priced too... not so good an investment.

Now I know why my parents didn't spring for the tape player in our 86 wagon. But someone should have told them that, with three kids, rubber floormats would have been the best $85 they ever spent.

Yep, and of all the expensive options on this car, they are the only ones left still on the job 20 years later. The cruise control went a long time ago, the fog lights were broken and replaced many times , and the tape player started chewing up tapes until finally the radio section went out about 1 1/2 years ago. The carpets under the mats still look like new.

Never had the floor mats on any of my previous Volvo's. Then I got my '86 about 2x years ago and it had the floor mats. They really are quite wonderful. I wish I had known about them sooner. I would put them in my '87 but $50 to $100 is just too much for a pair which seems to be the going price for decent used ones. If I ever have to part with my '86 you can bet I will take them out and use them in the '87 or a forthcoming Volvo. By the way I also have these heavy duty floor mats in rear too. Don't know if they came as complete 4x piece set or if front & rear were seperate options.

Floor mats was an option when it was new, so it's still a feature now.

Really? Amazing .. never heard of floor mats as an option. I thought it was as standard as seats or tires.

The floor mats are fairly hard plastic trays. They are a must if you live where you often get in the car with muddy shoes. Or if you have small children. The ones in my 90 245 cost about $100 US and were worth every penny. My V70 came with removable carpeted mats. I bought the plastic ones too, and my rugs will be better than new when the body falls off. The more I think about it the odder it seems.

Negative. Heck, look at a lot of the new cars. Floor mats are extra cost options.
