Hi all,
How long, in general, do NGK regular plugs last under normal conditions? My car seems a little sluggish and is losing MGP. Thanks.

I gapped mine every seven thousand miles or so when I owned the 245. Often ran 60k miles on a set of plugs. An old guy told me long ago that spark plugs are most often thrown away with years of life left on them. He never bought new ones, just picked the trash at the service station. A quick blast from the sand machine and they went on his shelf. This, from a man who ran a turbo Corvair in the Tri-State Winter Rally for many years.

After 25k mi, a set of NGK BP6ES in the 83 had their gaps opened up to around .040, or .010 over where I set them at installation. I replaced them with a fresh set and subjectively felt that starting was a little better, but no other signs.

If yours are past 20k or so, they're only $2 each, so go ahead and replace.

Other factors in a performance drop could be: tired O2 sensor, dirty air filter, clogged cat converter, numerous other things. But try the plugs first - cheap and quick.

Will a tired O2 sensor cause a intermittent sputter?

If they are the right heat (hot enough not to get carboned and cool enough
not to get burnt) they last quite a while. Have you looked at them?
