Draining the Gas Tank on a 86 245DL 200

Hello All,

Inga, 1986 245DL with 200K Miles

Getting Ready to break Inga out of mothballs and but her back on the Road. She had a "did not start" issue and since I did not need her at the time, rolled her into the garage and left her there. It has been 2 1/2 years so I a pretty sure the gas is bad. So it's time to drop her and drain her (the gas tank that is). Then I will go after the did not start issue. The fuel pumps were not running. But before I address that, thought some decent fuel might help uncloud the issue when I did the jumper test on the fuse panel.

Any tricks, warnings, tips, or sage advise?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Assuming this is an injected car, disconnect the pressure line from the injector rail (once the tank is empty) and blow the fuel back into the tank using compressed air. There could be enough crud / sediment in the fuel feed line to plug the injectors. Of course, replace the filter before refueling.

Another tip would be to run a piece of stiff wire down the filler neck until it hits the bottom of the tank, scrape it around a bit, and pull the wire back out. If there is brown goo on the wire, your tank should be cleaned out as well. Stale fuel "normally" has a sickeningly sweet smell to it and smells nothing like gasoline.

Spoiled/stale fuel can cause all kinds of problems if it is run through the engine:

    Plugged injectors / carb
    Plugged fuel regulator
Stuck intake valves (very ugly)... depending on engine design, at minimum, the head needs to come off.

Not to overstate the obvious, but best done outdoors. Don't know about your garage, but if connected to the house, would hate to have the gas vapors ignite(ie hot water heater or furnace pilot light.)
Had a troop fill a Coleman lantern while smoking. We got there 5 minutes later to a smoking ring on the ground where the command tent used to be. He survived the fire, but I'm not sure if he survived telling the commander what had happened!

Just pull the screw out of the bottom of the tank and drain it. Thing could hold as much as 16 gallons and it will take awhile to drain it through that hole, have fun.

What to do with the Gas.....Is there any grass that needs to die, burn ban here in Texas right now so the next ones out, live in a city and they don't like that anyway. Got to work on that one some more. I hate enviro decisons.

There is only about 5 gallons in there give or take couple, but must have a plan to capure and hold five gallons of gas. This is why you ask these questions. Was going to back it out of the Garage, because 36 inches off of that floor is a pilot lighted gas water heater and oh yeah, there is the gas dryer in the same area right down on the floor. No big bangs unless it is Inga roaring to life I hope.

Did not know about the hole in the bottom of the tank. Anyone guess which way I am going on this one?

Thanks for the tips, Since it is going to be sunny and in the 70's Saturday, it is time roll her out and giterdone.
