'90 740 speedo circuitry? 700 1990

Firstly, thanks a lot to Brickboard user TONY H - who helped me learn how to tune my car this weekend...I feel like such a grown up after getting nicely greased up under the hood of my car!

The one issue we couldn't figure out - my odometer is very moody - it works when it wants to - usually if the car has been running for over an hour or so. Tony looked under the rear axle at the circuitry for the speedo, and he feels it's definitely been tampered with - he saw aftermarket tape etc under there.

Neither of us have any experience working on 700s....

What should I be looking for/at when I'm examining the wiring under the rear axle? I have a Chilton manual (if that helps for reference). I would like to fix the odometer issue once and for all.

Thanks!

Are you brave enough to experiment with the Cluster you bought?

What I saw was a plastic housing that looked like it is screwed to the Case with an Allen key piece of hardware. 2 exposed white wires coming out that, there was a tie-wrap wrapped around the Plastic housing clamping the wires down to it. My 200 has a rubber boot kind of connector that just unplugs where this one was secured with hardware. because of the tie wrap scenario I didn't want to tamper with it until learning more.

Shouldn't those wires work the Speedometer as well as the Odometer?
Can anyone tell me where on the Instrunent cluster those wires attach? How can I make sure I am getting a signal to the Cluster?

Wreckingcru also has a Gas Gauge issue. It is not always accurate. I followed the wires from the Sender but they disappeared into the frame before seeing a connector that I could have possibly disconnected and cleaned. Any help in this area would help too.

Where the speedo connects into the rear axle, plastic slip on connector. The wiring is known to breakdown there. There originally was safety wire wrapped around the connector to prevent tampering. Mine was shorting out against each other. The nice thing about volvo connectors, they open up and you can re run wiring.

          Aleekat,
I'm sure it's not really a broken odometer - if it was, would the odometer EVER work? I'm considering replacing the cluster and seeing if it works, but I somehow have my doubts.

          Your thoughts?

Wreckingcru says that the Odometer functions after about an hour of driving. I would think that if the gear sticks it would not intermittenly work.

It's worth a try. He already bought an entire Cluster. Maybe I can take that one apart, get the Odometer closer to what the anticipated mileage is then put it back together and install.

          Thanks
