Another Nivomat question... 700 1987

Hello all! I just aquired a 1987 760GLE sedan with 263k miles from my neighbor and I have a question. I know this car has the Nivomat rear end, which has completely gone out. That stated, I need to replace the shocks but I don't want to invest much money into this car as I have no idea when it will stop running... Can I use the suspension (springs and shocks) out of a similar era 740 sedan and just put them onto my car, or do I HAVE to buy the Nivomat conversion kit? If not, what are my other options? I wouldn't mind doing some slight modifications to make the new parts work if it will keep the cost down. Thanks in advance!

If it's independent rear suspension you need the conversion kit. Live axle, you can swap in the regular springs & shocks. Or so I've been told. I think your 87 is live axle (good news for you).
