failed turbo question? 700

I have a 1990 740 turbo wagon with 180,00 miles driven. My turbo has ceased to function due to a ruptured hose. which I hear is expensive to replace, can I continue driving without turbo boost without causing harm to my engine?

I drove my '89 around for months with a seezed turbo without any problem other than it was really s l o w. A leak is another matter. Any intake leaks should be fixed asap. Hoses are always available from ebay and you can usually pay with a bank check.

How did the exhaust gas get past the turbine wheel? Through the TINY wastegate hole???

The turbo does not really need to be spinning to allow the exhaust to escape. It only sits in the exhaust path and gets the benefit of the flow.

As a temporary fix. remove hose & clean it well, then wrap it with duct tape- several layers of it, as the tape will have to withstand presssure. I went to Lowe's and got a rubber drain hose coupling, which is the same size as the outside of the bad hose, and used this piece of rubber as reinforcement, then wrapped it with duct tape.

    Hello:

Not a great idea-- your car may be running very rich right now-- if you do that for a long time you run the risk of cascading failures, plus your mileage will suffer.

Check out FCPgroton.com for moderate hose pricing, or try e-bay for good used stuff. Local boneyards might do the trick. Get new hoses if you plan on keeping the car for a while.

    Good luck!
