PV444 hubs for disk brake conversion 444-544

I received my new Scandix 1800 disk brake rotors ($75 each)

And the holes lined up perfectly with my PV444 (1957) hubs!!

Only problem was the lip on the 1800 rotor (see photo above) caused the hub not to seat in the disk flush. To circumvent this, we ground a cutaway out of my PV444 hubs to make them mesh with the disks.

Just waiting for wheel studs, new castellated nuts to go on the spindles, and dust covers now (all harder to find than I initally thought).

We finally found studs and got them installed on one side

So, the picture above is Carlos using an impact wrench to "seat" the new studs--or pull them through both the disc and hub--notice we used a few bolts and washers under the lug nuts? But let me back up one step: first, we had to get the holes in the PV 444 hub (previously drum) the same size (Exactly) as the holes in the 1800 disc brakes. The hubs were slightly undersized. So to do this, we used an adjustable reamer, shown in the L in this photo below. Finding studs that fit was tricky. I probably could have just ordered some from Olof or Swedish Treasures ($6.25 EACH) but I wasn't exactly sure they'd fit, as I am using my PV hubs (not 1800 hubs) with Scandix 1800 discs (earlier type). So we measured and searched until we found some Doorman p/n 310-032 1" protruding wheel studs that worked, for only $2.89 each. What a bargain. At this point I should probably add up all the costs to make my PV hubs work with these new disc brakes, but I'm afraid it might run over the ~$200/side Olof is charging for discs with hubs. Oh vell, it was fun anyway.

I should probably add a pic of my new calipers with the (finally got a lucky break) crossover line I found at Checker today! Wohoo Only $2.99 each--for the English threaded type. Sometimes you do get lucky at the auto parts store.

Is your conversion for a dual or single circuit brake system?

I'm just starting to get some parts together to convert my '65 122 over to the later 1800 ('69-'73) setup, and wondering if you're doing a similar project?

Paul

It's a single circuit, I believe. How come you're upgrading? Is it just time and you like the latter disc setup better?

Single circuit brakes make you nervous. Any single failure in any part of the system and you instantly have no brakes at all.

That's pretty much the case. I had a leaking rear brake cylinder that almost had me slamming in the back end of a car, plus I drive 60 miles a day through Denver traffic.

It seemed that you were using 1800 parts, and thought you were using the dual circuit setup from a later one. If you were using the dual circuit setup, I had some questions.

Not me, that's one of thos things I would like to get around to at some point. Mine is still the original single circuit system, the only modification to the brakes so far has been to put 122 discs up front (after I had the front drums fade a couple of times).

Yeah I guess it would be nice to upgrade to a dual circuit brake system. But until the master cylinder goes out or something else in this conversion reveals it to be necessary, I think this project will have to wait for some time down road. I am too anxious to drive my car again! Maybe we'll find out when we test drive it soon though, that it needs it (or something close) anyway.

It's a little tricky to see those photos since they're so small. The photos are larger on my webshots page:

p.s. The 4th set of disc rotors (for $50 each) never came in. I ordered them online from coximports.com and they were called OEM 1800 disk rotors. I called them about my order yesterday (which was placed on 12/28/05 according to my printout) and they said it wasn't in the computer. Go figure. And I had an order # and everything (???). Anyway, good thing I ordered the Scandix brake rotors as a backup plan!! They look very good and I don't think I'll have any problems with runout.

This conversion should be complete in no time. :)

Still interested in selling the 1800 hubs to me? 444-544

I've decided to just repair my current leaking drum and get the car back on the road rather than work on my conversion just yet, but I would like to have the hubs ready in hand so that I can get started once I am ready.
