head gasket 900

Hello, I have run into bills for the job as high as 1300.00, but I know you can do the job yourself for less than 300.00. The headset is cheap 65.00. The resurface the head will cost 80.00 to 120.00 depending on where you are. The rest of the cost, thermostat, silicone(grey), water pump, antifreeze, white lithium greese and a few other goods used. I like to use a 2x4 and use 100 grit emeroy paper over the steel cylinder head mating surface to make it nice and clean. New bolts, maybe, check the stretch(or length)for reuse. My cars I don't, customer cars I do. Good luck, too bad you weren't near the Richmond, Va. area. Good luck, Pauli

Depending upon how much it needs and where you take it you could spend upwards of $1200.00

Typically it is in the ballpark of 8 hours labor, the head gasket set is about $150.00, valves are about $80.00 or so apiece, and the machine shop will set you back in the area of $300.00-$400.00 for a good reputable shop that does Volvos. So if you figure $75.00 an hour($600.00)your looking at $1050.00 plus any valves you need replacing and tax, you had better plan on at least $50.00 in miscellaneous stuff too while you are in there, possibly more. You can save a bundle by doing it yourself and providing your own parts but if you are not set up for that kind of work then you are going to have to pay someone to do it. Even in doing it yourself you will still need a machine shop to take care of the necessary machine work. Now if the head is flat and the valves are good then you can just clean it all up and do a head gasket only on it, but rarely is that the case.
