I need your help with idle problem 700 1989

Original post:

RWD - Hesitation @ 1000RPM.

To recap, I've gone through FAQ Slight Hesitation on Acceleration; Several Diagnostic Checks, cleaned throttle body and checked TPS/AMM connections + recently cleaned IAC.

Any further ideas? I'd like to get this fixed.

When you say it surges, I take it you mean the RPM jumps way too high when you slightly depress the accelerator?

I would think that your prime suspect would be the IAC. It should be closing when you come off idle. Have someone push the pedal just off idle, then immediately pinch off the inlet hose to the IAC when this occurs. If this eliminates the surging, then either:
    1) your TPS switch signal isn't making it to the ECU (or the ECU is faulty)
    2) your IAC is sticking open, when it should be closed off-idle.

I made some other suggestions at the bottom of this thread that might be helpful. (Ignore my earlier post in that thread, however; it was just plain wrong!)

Hello Norm: If it hasn't been done already, then I would go ahead and replace the intake manifold gasket. It is an easy job, won't hurt,is cheap and it would rule that one out.

There's a post a few days ago where someone sprayed butane lighter fluid around the intake system to check for leaks. The idle increased and they thought it indicated an intake system leak. Wouldn't want to try it around an old points/condenser ignition system but it may be worth a try? Was the IAC bench tested to see if it actually worked?

Hi Gary, I haven't bothered with intake gasket since it was replaced summer '97 or ~50K miles ago. At a Volvo dealer too so should be decent quality.

As mentioned vacuum is 18in/hg although a little rough.

You may want to still consider it as a possibility, and not dismiss it out of hand. I have had two go bad over the years, always sagging/leaking at the bottom of the #2 or #3 runner.

If its a rough idle problem that disappears after engine is warm (I'm not sure of you problem from you post), could be temp sensor at rear of engine block. It controls fuel based on temperature.
