Air con/alternator 900 1993

Change aircon compressor 3 months ago. Now sometimes the compressor is not activated. I reiterate sometimes. Some say it is the air con control board/relay. Others strongly advise, it must be be the alterator from past experience. Any advice please.

Dear larrytay88,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Let me expand, a little, on how aircon controllers fail. The printed circuit board has two weak points: the power relay and the power connector. The relay - a switch - handles about 20 Amps. It is the compressor switch. If the relay's four soldered connections to the circuit board develop micro-cracks - breaks far too small to be seen with the unaided eye - the compressor won't come on.

The cure. Remove the air controller from the car. Open up the cover - secured by four small metal tabs - and remove the printed circuit board (four screws). Using a low-power soldering iron (25 watts, max), touch the tip to each of the relay's four connection points, for 1-2 seconds. As soon as the solder liquefies, remove the iron. That's it: you've re-flowed the solder and so closed up the crack.

You can find the relay easily. It is a black plastic box, about 3/4" (19mm) long, 1/2" (12.7mm) wide, and about 3/8" (10mm) tall. The connection points are at the relay's corners.

The second weak point is the main power connection. It has 12 connection points to the printed circuit board. It is located on the back side of the control unit (that opposite the switches). The same cure works for those joints.

See the FAQs - under SITE FEATURES - for how to remove the aircon controller. It takes some time and patience, but is not a horrendous procedure.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

If you have never re-soldered the control board, that' probably the problem.
