Blower moter 200 1984

Okay, i have a 1984 244 gl with a bad blower motor and i finally decided to replace it. I know it's in the dash, near the two central vents, but im not sure where to start. I was just asking for any tips or any precautions. I know it's goning to take awhile, i just wanted to know what im getting into. Thanks for the help.

What you're getting into is about the most involved job that can be done on a 240. General estimates of time to do the job run to about eight hours. Search the archives and you'll find links to pages of step by step instructions. Of special interest should be Art Bernstein's page (and IMHO, everything the man has ever uttered) at http://www.cleanflametrap.com. I'm particularly fond of the picture of the pile of parts that had to be removed.

Bruce, I'd like to look at that photo shoot but I cannot make your link work. It refers me to the Brickboard.

Thanks Art, that's the URL I used — and got connected OK when I pasted it in a new window. So I was surprised when it didn't work in a link. But then it doesn't take much to surprise me. I get unsettled, unnerved, and unseated easily too.

After looking at your link, I see I needed the www. Two slashes didn't cut it (ouch).

Spend an extra 10-15 minutes removing the whole dash will make it go a whole lot smoother.

The whole dash? I'm a newbie, is there a good way to go about this? I don't want to mess up anything, and cause more problems.

I've done this job 4 times now...finally getting my time down to 1hr and 45minutes...but yes when it comes down to it, definately remove the entire dash, and just label each part as to where it connects as you take it off so you can put it right back the same way...it is time consuming to say the least, but just have some system of remembering where everything goes and you'll do fine. Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys, but i was just wondering. When i turn on my heater/AC it makes an awful squeeling noise, sounds like a lube problem, but i asked a few people i know who are experienced mechanics, and they all said blower motor. I just wanted to ask you guys what you think seeing that many of you have done this before. Is it the blower motor? I don't want to do a nine hour job if its not what my problem is. THanks for the help.

Has to be the blower motor. If the bearings get bad enough the shaft has so much play that the fan impellers rub on the scroll case, as seen in one of Art's photos.

I removed the dash - it definitely made the blower (and surroundings) removal simpler and damage-free. Just be prepared for more time and, as mentioned, organize the removed parts for reassembly. Dash removal pictures at Dave Shannon's website. http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/Dash.html

Thanks for all the help guys. Just one more question. Should i think about replacing anything else inside my dash while i have it apart? Anything that might go bad within the next few years or so. You know, anything that commonly breaks. Thanks again for helping, i'll post again with the results.

You might also consider replacing the heater core at the same time. An extra $60-$100, but see what it looks like when you have the thing apart. It's one of those things: it might last forever, or it might blow up the week after you've replaced the blower.

The important stuff has been covered already but:

                Take out the whole dash.

Label everything. Stick a piece of tape on every hose and wire with the location noted on it, it makes re-assembly faster.
Get a box of Ziplocs and bag all your screws and clips

Consider taking out the front seats. It makes things a lot easier. Just watch out for those seat studs poking out of the floor. They fit just right between your ribs.

It's also good time to install that poochy cd/mp3/satellite stereo you've been eyeing.

If you don't have a repair manual already, it would come in handy. Haynes will do.

                Good luck
