1966 122s Rear Axle Castle Nut 120-130

I'm trying to pull a rear brake drum on a 1966 122s. The castle nut has seen better days. Where can I get a good used replacement? I want to reverse the nut before I employ the drum puller (so not to mushroom the axle, the drum is really stuck) -- cannot do it with the castle nut that was on, it won't thread upside down. Also, hints for getting the (frozen) drum off? Thanks, Erik

1.)The big castellated (ridged) nuts, are SAE, and can be found at any serious parts house, e.g. NAPA. I've usually found them in those orange drawers (DORMAN is the company, if I remember correctly).

2.)Investing in the correct size die to clean up damaged axle threads wouldn't be a waste of money. I spent around $25.00 almost 10 years ago, but it's been a good friend many a time since.

3.)Try to find some new "keys", the tapered wedges which slide into the slot on the axle. I've seen those wear out, and get sloppy in the groove. Result can be untraceable "clunks ", and maybe worse!

4.)Also, use some graphite paste, or other anti-seize compound before you replace the drum. Big Tip; first put the drum on the axle, THEN slide the key into its slot. Remember to re-torque after a few miles.

5.)Don't try ro re-use your cotter pins too often.

6.)Check the 4 bolts which hold the backing plate to the axle. I've seen those be loose, with strange consequences.

7.)I swear by Rust-Blaster, but the main idea is to give any penetrant plenty of time to do its thing (overnight, or better yet, a day or two).

8.)Brush your teeth, write your mother, etc., etc.,,!! Good luck

It is a 7/8" UNF thread as best I can remember. NOT Metric!!
Any place that has lots of bolts and nuts should be able to fix you up.

A simple but VERY effective puller can be made like this:

In use it looks like this:

The lug bolts pull the puller in and push the axle through the drum taper.

Great, thanks for the detailed info. Got one that fit from a local parts place that has NAPA parts.

I made my own puller using George's excellent, simple design, and it works great!

Total cost: one pitcher of microbrew (for my buddy who welded a plug onto the end of the hub)

    Howdy!
I bought one of these drum pullers(I have 3 122's now) and
have had no problems with the drums ever since.

You may need to back the brake shoes off a lot as a small
ridge can form on the inside edge of the drum and it makes
it a pain to get off.
