Overdrive not disengaging. 120-130

I have recently completed a 1966 122 with a B20 and an M41 tranny with J type overdrive. I am having a problem with the overdrive. It shifts in and out of overdrive just fine except if I drive at speed for a prolonged time ie; 1/2 hour or more. When I go to disengage the overdrive, it will not disengage immediately but will take some time. I have tried different ways to overcome this but I haven't found anything that works consistently.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is happening and what I might do? The obvious concern is that I will overlook this and shift into reverse.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Duane:

I will need the o-rings that you describe, from the replies my post has generated. My e-mail address is g.cooper@sympatico.ca

    Thanks

Since John and Dave have pretty much put the problem in front of you with the solenoid, I'll add a few more cents worth.

Removing the solenoid, partially disassembling it, cleaning it out with a cleaner then reassembling it will help for a little while.

Once apart, you should replace the O-rings inside the solenoid.

If doing so without instructions or a picture, do not even attempt to separate the brass snout from the black coil body. It is a crimped joint and if you separate that joint, I doubt if you could get it back together and have it last.

Also, do not attempt to get the solenoids O-rings from the hardware store. They are more special than what might fit any water faucet.

      Duane,
I too am having the same issue. I replaced the solenoid that came with the transmission with another used one. In the process, I replaced one of the O rings with a hardware store ring. Looked the same to me, but obviously not. Can you tell me how to obtain the correct rings and are they both the same or does one go on before the other? Thanks for any advise you may have.

I would need an e-mail address to send a set of instructions on how to clean the solenoid properly.

In the instructions are where to get the proper O-rings.

John is dead on as usual, my ES was doing the exact same thing. Go to the local pick and pull and get a solenoid off of any 240 with an M-46. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks each. I ground a cheap crescent wrench down to fit between the body of the solenoid and trans, a wrench the proper size would have been better but it worked.

Most likely an issue with the solenoid. There are two failure modes (that I know of) that will make it act like this:
    - The O-rings along its shaft are shot, allowing oil to bypass the shut off valve and engage the OD regardless
    - The electrical part of the solenoid has gotten full of oil (probably also related to a leaking O-ring?) that makes it v-e-r-y- s-l-o-w to respond.
