homemade bung nut wrench 200

After installing a brand-new defective in-tank pump, I'd thought that I would try to fabricate a tool rather than re-borrow a friend's wrench for the second install. (I hate to borrow tools--especially more than once!) It took less time to make than driving over to borrow the "real" tool, and with a set of vice grips clamped onto the side, it worked like a charm. Click the link for a pic.

Mine was not rusted so this worked. I made it out of 1/8" x 1" steel flat from a hardware store. The new O-ring was also to large so I reused the old one. This was >15 years ago. I probably used a crescent wrench or vise grips to turn it.

Can you post the pic on the Brickboard image library?

Please provide some added info on how you are gripping the fabricated angle iron to turn it.

Easier to sketch it that to find it in my "inventory" Too simple - (I guess that is my specialty), the length is short enough to fit inside the access panel and the notch is large enough to clear the pipes/wires. Just clamp onto the edge of the angle with the notch and give it a twist.

Huh? Wow flood you're still here! 200 1988

When I saw tbb2's post, I got the urge to tell him he was replying to a thread from more than 13 years ago and shouldn't expect a response as supposedly you last visited on Oct 24, 2014. Then I noticed another thread by him and moved on to that.

Yet, here you are! Musta been lonely, waiting all those years for someone to post you. ;)

Ha that's funny. Yes, lonely flood, waiting for a response. (Actually, I check in often, but I rarely have anything constructive to add) I did post a sketch of the tool in my post (on brickpix)that was visible at first, but later taken down, even though it met the pixel width X height and file size parameters. ?? Perhaps it will pop back up.

You're one up on me. I tried to make one out of 1/8" x 3/4" billet steel, bent into an upside-down U shape with the ends bent in and trimmed to fit into the notches in the bung nut. I added a 3/8" square hole in the top for a socket wrench. My tank bung was so stuck it bent the heck out of it.

Check out the 700-900 FAQ's link at upper right of the 200 Forum page. Look for Volvo Special Tools and the index will mention the prepump/sender tool. Dimensions are there.

Where you notched the metal, does that straddle the Fuel lines?

Yes, I had a piece of 3-1/2 X 5" angle iron laying about, and cut off a 3-1/4 inch section with a carborundum blade on a circular saw. (I clamped a block of wood onto the iron to act as a guide) Then, I nibbled out a section in the center to clear the fuel lines and wires. Twenty minute job tops, including clean up.

So, how thick is this chunk of angle iron? Quarter-inch?

Looks like 1/4 or 5/16ths. Strength against warping is the angle across the top. You could probably cut a 1/2" drive hole in the top flat of the angle or weld on a stub from a shorite extension and get same result.

          Nice job.
