240 Anti-lock Brake Problem 200 1993

My wifes 240 wagon ('93) abs system will activate once or twice after every start, when reversing out of the driveway. I can start the car, back down the drive way, then apply the brakes, and the pedal thumps once. If i release the brakes, then reapply, everything is normal. If i stop the engine, immediately restart, and continue backing down the driveway, when i apply the brakes it thumps again. It has been doing this off and on for a couple months, and I cleaned the grounds on the abs unit. This temporarily made the problem go away, however now it is back and very consistent. It also randomly acts up when going forwards at slow speeds, the abs system will kick in and the pedal will vibrate as expected if I was on ice etc. The pads/rotors are 6 months old, pins lubricated and in good shape, no abnormal vibration during braking, and the other day when someone cut me off, I slammed on the brakes and the car stopped as it should. Any thoughts on where i should look next?

    240 Anti-lock Brake Problem 200 1993

    Dear Ben,

Behind the wheel there is a ring of teeth that the reluctor for the ABS "reads" by sensing the alternating presence of the gear teeth. This is how the ABS system knows the wheel is turning and not locked up or skidding. These teeth become filled with dirt over time and the sensor has trouble knowing if the wheel is turning or locked up, hence the intermittent activation of the ABS. The solution is to clean these gears with a wire brush and the problem will go away.

Like a deep low twang at low speeds, right? I had the exact same problem with my 93 245. Originally, cleaning the ABS sensors would cure the problem for 6 months or so. Then, when that stopped working, I had to clean the reluctor wheel behind the rotors in order to get it to stop. Finally, even that stopped working and it turned out the sensors themselves were shot. If you clean the sensors and the reluctor wheel and that doesn't solve the problem, I'll bet it's the sensors. For detailed troubleshooting of the system, get the green book for the brake system and make sure your edition is the latest (covers ABS). For testing purposes, you can remove the (I think) the 10 amp spade fuse from the ABS computer, which is under the right seat, near the front right edge of the car. You can remove the seat to get to it, or you can leave the seat in place and peel back the carpet and underlayment to expose it. Removing the fuse will defeat the ABS system and cause the brakes to act like regular, non-ABS brakes.

Pls let us know how it turned out.

Just a thought, no guarantees. Wipe any and all metal shavings (from pads and rotors) from the ABS wheel sensors and tone rings. If there is an excessive buildup, pulse signals could be missed (ABS interprets this as a wheel slip).

Another possibility is that one of the wheel sensor harnesses or connectors is intermittent.
