power steering 140-160

My 140 came equipped with power steering and AC. From what I understand these cant be used with the supercharger system... so out they come. Do I need to replace the steering box with a non power unit or can I unhook the lines and plug the holes?

Rob

Rob,

I hope you get everything sorted with your Supercharger, PS and AC but if you dont id be happy to buy them from you!

If anyone else has these units and wants to get rid of them please let me know.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Cheers
Evan

Rob,
I don't recall having any discussion with you of wanting to run power steering and AC with the supercharger. We have not done it yet, as no one has requested it, but I see no reason that it can't be done. So don't yank those parts until we get a chance to talk about it.

If it's easy enough and wont cost a lot to adapt the PS system to use with the supercharger I might do that. I think the AC system would be nice but I can do without.

My 240 is done the same way you described with one of the hoses bridging the gap between each end. Works fine for me & a lot of other people. I wasn't sure if it would work with the 140 steering box. In the future I will have to change to a non PS unit because I'll be swapping in a b23. But that may not be for a few years. It all depends on when I finnish the resto on the 1800 and can put the b20 in that.

Thanks
Rob

Try to keep the power steering, it's so much better than the manual box. You can get really wind the caster up on them too.

If you replace the PS gear, you also need a longer steering shaft. Any chance of custom making a 4 (or 5 or 6...) belt pully? Can't be too hard, and fitting an electric fan in front instead of the viscous fan behind the radiator would give much more space.

Manual steering is light, except for parking or lady drivers. That's how I stop my wife from driving my toy...

My 164 came with a 3 pully crank, 1 for alt/WP, 1 for AC/PS, and one for air pump. Find out if you can get one of these for your 144 and keep the AC/PS.
Otherwise, you will need to replace the PS with standard steering unit.

Why can't you use them? Too big?
I think you should NOT try to use the PS steering gear with holes plugged.
The manual steering gear works very well.

It's a matter of the crank pulley, George. The 3-belt pulley is used in the s'charger kit, with one of the grooves driving the impeller.

On my 164 the PS/AC run on one and the WP/Alt run on another. If you have
3, can't you use the 3rd one for the supercharger?

two points

1) there's a 140 in my garage with a power steering box with a hose between the two ports and there do not appear to be any steering problems. The car was setup as a rally car and I am guessing that the power steering box may have a faster ratio than the manual box.

2) swapping belts around to use one for the supercharger sounds simple but is not.
first, the normal v belt will not transmit sufficient power, so you have to use a modern multi ribbed belt which takes up more space than a V belt. Second, fore and aft location is critical and is basically set, without modifying the whole system.
The most likely solution is using the serpentine belt to drive several components as is SOP on most modern vehicles.

Somehow the engineering around this problem doesn't sound like something
that would baffle a good mechanic........
