I need a new heater core 120-130

well, phooey-
every time a 122 went through the local pick- a- part,
I pulled the heater core.

So why do I need a new one?
Because 3 of 3 have cracked tanks!
Who woulda thunk it?

2 questions, then-
can they be found new for sane money?
Is there a core from some other car that will work?

I was all excited to take a core to the local
rad shop to get recored...

But in other news, I'm working on the 122 project
for the first time in 3 years!

Is the tank cracked or the core??? Certainly a decent radiator shop can repair a tank or find a similar one to put on your (hopefully) decent cores?

Heck, take all three to the shop and have them make one (or two) good ones from the mess.

of 6 tank ends,

I have 2 good ones.

Yes, 2.

And no, they don't make a matched pair!

All I can figure is, since it doesn't freeze much around here,
people ran water in the cooling system.

On the odd days that it DID freeze, the heater cores did, too.
And the tanks took the brunt of the expansion.
I dunno.

"I'm off to the junkyard with a core core in my hand..."

Toby,
Those things are made of brass and amenable to patching. It is a low pressure
system and they should be able to fix at least ONE of them.

Note that stress corrosion cracking occurs in brass in the presence of either
ammonia compounds or mercury compunds, at VERY low levels. For example the
tiny brass safety strap on electrically detonated grenades will crack
when buried in leaf litter in the tropics, apparently from ammonia-like
compounds generated in decomposition of leaf mold.
(Learned a lot of stuff in Panama!)

I'm going to take my bucket of parts to the local rad shop
and see if he can come up with something.

Pulling heater cores at the junkyard is a royal pain in the
patoot.

Well..... 120-130

Did you ever work on the heater of a 240? The one where they set the heater
on a stand and built the car around it.....
By comparison the 122 heater is Duck Soup!

yeah...

that's what I meant- pulling cores out of other cars to try to find something that fits is just NOT my cuppa tea! I'm going to take my parts to the rad shop and let him have a go at it. As a friend said- 'It's not brain surgery, it's just a heater! It doesn't have to be smart if it works!'
