V6 engine & tranny into a P220??? 120-130

Hello all!

Has anyone here tried this or know someone who has???
I would like to put a V6 in a P220.

I just purchased a second P220 and this one, although
solid, needs some TLC. My 16 year old son saw it and
has some ideas about doing a major reconstruction to it
rather than a restoration.

I will most likely be doing some very tight measuring
this weekend but I knew if anyone had done something like
this or knew someone who had, this would be the place
to ask first.

i was thinking a chevy or ford(older) V6's
I heard a while back that people were using
buick 215 V8's in some of the rally cars but I wasn't
sure if they used them in 122/220's.

Thanks guys for any help you can give.

regards,

karl

    Seeing how a t-bricker fitted a twin-turbo Chevy 283 V8 under the hood of his 122, I say a V6 will fit.

    Hi Karl,

I'm sure you'll get some private notes on this one...I'm not really in favour of doing these sorts of conversions, but it is your car and you can do what you like. I'd suggest the V6 Chev (they make a 60 degree V that fits the engine bay of a Jaguar MK2, so should fit the 122). I have a 1960 Jag MK2 and once considered the V6 conversion, but got flamed so hard on my Jag list just for asking the same question you did that I saw the error of my ways.

The downsides of these conversions are that they devalue the car and change the flavour of the beast. While the engine may fit, it isn't always that straight forward to construct mounts, rework heating arrangements and get gages working correctly (you could always stick on a bunch of aftermarket gages and a huge 5" tach for that rice-ride look :-) ). I think having a retro ride is much cooler than trying to build some sort of FrankenVolvo. Search for a b20 to rebuild and put a V-Performance supercharger on it (no connection)...your son will have more than enough power to get into lots of trouble with the local constabulary and should have lots of fun breaking rear axels etc.

I'm simply uprating the performance of my 122s as the B18 is getting tired and with the new front suspension, I need more performance to keep the stupid grin on my face full-time.

    Cheers,
    Craig

I know there are many die-hard vintage people here but
I do have 1 stock p220 in nice shape and if most saw this car
they would just part it out and be done with it.

On the good note it does have a B20 in it and performance wise
it would easily compete with the V6 if we did it up right.

I just didn't know if anyone had any experience here
trying something like this. I think it is a good car for
my son to dive in on and learn something about cars as they
are really not very complex and I am just happy he is thinking
about a Volvo rather than joining in the "tunner" generation.

Any and all input is welcome.
I will gladly listen to everyones opinions on this
and take them all into consideration.

      Thanks all,

      Karl

From a practical standpoint, nearly all engine swaps are a pain in the neck. Always lot of fiddly little problems and never, ever, quite done. Done several and I still wonder what was going on in my head!!!

I have no dog in this fight, except to say I am much more interested in driving a reliable, even sporty, old Swede and a nicely warmed over B20 is just fine for me!!

        Mike
