hi all, i have a 1990 volvo 745 non turbo and it is in dire need of new tires. after reading all of the tires recommended here in kinda of confuse and would like some feedbacks.
i live in LOS ANGELES and do most of my driving locally here. what would be the best suited tire size for my car?

The most economical would be a tall, narrow tire. Such said, getting 4 donut rims and mounting 165R15 tires would not a wise choice either.
All season and some touring tires tend to have narrower treads, creating less rolling resistance. If you're running steelies, consider getting a set of lighter alloy wheels, as the less weight, the less effort to turn.
If you want a good tire bargain, decent traction and longevity, and don't care so much for handling, look at some Kumho 795's (like $43 + fees at Discount Tire Centers). FWIW, the largest tire I've fitted underneath a 745 is 205/70/15. I'd moreso look at 195/65/15's, though.

My past experience has included junkyard tires with varying experiences, Sumitomo tires which have a tendency to separate, Goodyear Eagles that have like zero wet traction, General tires which have so little traction I could spin them with a non-turbo slushbox Volvo, and Michelins that are quiet but expensive and not that great in overall performance. When they started proving themselves in SCCA competitions, I looked at Kumho. 4 sets later, every time I need new tires, I look to them. Best bang for the buck, IMHO.

The recommended tire size is printed on the plaque on the sill of one of the front doors. (I can't remember if it's the driver's or passenger side)
If you have 15" rims, it's 185/65-15. If you have 16" rims, it's 205/55-16.
If you wanted to go a little taller with the tire, you could go with a 195/65-15. Personally, I think the 185/65-15 tires look and feel a size too small.
I have a set of 205/55-16 for my summer tires, and a set of 185/65-15 for my winter tires. When compared side by side/off the car, the summer tires are a little taller.
Good evening... and good luck.

It really depends on what wheels you car has.
Some stock 740's have 185/70-14 rim 5.5 inch wide, steel or aluminum, still the same tire size (most DL, GL & GLE up to '90)
Others of later years use a 15"x 5.5" steel wheel, and a 185/65-15 is stock
Others with aluminum wheels were 15" x 6" wide, 15"x7" wide, and these were fitted with 195/65-15. These can also be fitted to the steel wheels and are a good, tall highway tire size.
