740 GL Struts 700 1989

I am trying to replace the struts on my son's '89 740. The Chilton manual says I may need a Volvo tool 5173 for strut removal. Does anyone have experience with suspension? Do I need to spend $70 for this tool?

All you need are spring compressors - good ones. I've always managed to undo the strut top nut with a wrench and some channel locks (what I call mole-grips in the UK). Wrench may need hammering. If it's really stuck I suppose you may need an impact wrench but you can partially try to undo the nut before you do anything else or buy special tools. Regards.

I'm not sure what the tool is, but I did my 85. Spring compressor and impact wrench for the top nut. Look here:
