245 on snow & ice? opinions please.

Greetings!
I'm getting ready to take a trip to Bend, Oregon next month.
There is no doubt that there will be snow and ice on the roads.
I have the option to take my 05' 2 wheeel drive Toyota Tundra, or my 82' 245.
Either way I will have chains with me, and they are both rear wheel drive.
Which should be safer and more under control in the ice and snow?
Thanks!

Take the brick, it will handle better. Snows on all four would be really nice, but if going with chains, get a set of Whitestar chains from security chain http://www.scc-chain.com/Pages%20Traction/Traction%20products/ws%20alloy.html

Those things go on easy, stay tight track great, and don't break links ( I used to run the commercial version of those things on semi trucks up in that neck of the woods, never broke a link, regular chains would break a link everytime i'd hang the dang things )
I have Nokian snow tires for my bricks, but i keep a set of whitestar chains just in case winter sneaks up on me.
You may find some folks selling them on ebay now

Whatever you do , don't bother with cable chains, they do some good on fresh snow, but on ice they're worthless.

For either vehicle you decide to take, place some weight over the rear axle, like a bag of sand and a bag of rock salt. It not only will improve traction, but come in handy if you get stuck.

I saved the day on a mountain pass in New Mexico during an ice storm when I took the sand and rock salt out of the trunk of my '96 960 sedan. There was a line of cars that couldn't make it up the slope, and I spread the stuff and everybody made it up with a few exceptions. I didn't get stuck, but many 4wd p/ups & SUV's did because they were hasty, stupid and cocky (the 'look at me, I have a truck, I'm invincible!' syndrome), and we all watched as they drove up the shoulder, spun out and went off the road, needing a tow truck to get out of the ditch. Ha Ha, one guy had his wife screaming at him for being so dumb.

Be cool, cautious and patient, and you'll be OK. I would take any Volvo over a p/up becasue they are better balanced in wet/snow. either way, more weight in the back helps to improve the balance of a rwd vehicle.

I'd choose a 245 with snow tires over any 2wd pickup. That said, take whichever has the best tires for snow, any RWD with worn all-seasons is not going very far in the snow.

245 with snow tires is a fantastic winter vehicle; the rear glass makes the weight balance 50/50 - Volvo 240s with snow tires are great in the snow - without, not so much.
