What is this? And to what does it connect, please?!? (Image included...) 200 1981

Back a few months ago, when repalcing the flame trap in my fiancee's 1981 245 DL, I mistankenly yanked this part.

Flash forward to now, when I am trying to wrap up a flame trap, oil trap, engine bay cleaning, vacuum line replacement, wire replacement, intake cleaning, etc. project.

I have located the sketch I made of the fuel line connections (it has K-jet), but not the one I made of the vacuum connections. I need help putting this back together.

Can you tell me what the pictured part is? The tiny vacuum port connects to what looks like a solenoid on the firewall. Where do the larger ports lead? It looks like the largest (bottom) port is mounted in-line between one component and another, perhaps the lower part of the auxiliary air valve and the idle control valve?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

I had to replace that on my 79. Hope you can zoom in on this manual page image and relate it to the throttle body and aux valve hose.

Bingo...now the $64,000 follow-up 200 1981

Thanks to both of you, Joe for the explanation, and to Art - this diagram was just what I needed to confirm my suspicions. You've gone way above and beyond to assist me. The quality of help on this board never ceases to amaze.

If the A/C on this car is inoperable, and there are no plans to replace/repair the system, could I just delete this device? Run a straight tube from the AAV to the large nipple on the throttle body, cap the smaller nipple on the throttle body, cap both nipples on the firewall solenoid, and eliminate the "T" in the vacuum hose running between the manifold nipple and the solenoid, using the manifold vacuum to operate only the vacuum advance on the distributor, rather than both the vacuum advance and the solenoid?

One thing's clear, I need to get my hands on a set of these manuals if I'm serious about working on this car...

Thanks again,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I would agree with your assessment of its workings. The bulging end of it, where the diaphragm is, just allows the extra air to bypass the throttle when vacuum is allowed to pull the diaphragm out. So if it doesn't leak, leave it in place, disconnect and cap the vacuum circuit. If it does leak (mine did) you will have to find something to join the two pieces of the AAV hose and something to plug the AC port on the throttle body.

Does your car have A/C? My '80 260 had one of those to give
fast idle when the A/C compressor kicked on.

It does have A/C...non-functioning, but has it nonetheless. Do you happen to remember what the connections were? Thanks for your help, Joe.

My car had the v6 engine, so I can't help much with the connections.
The small line from the firewall solenoid opens and closes the pictured
valve to let some extra air into the manifold. The other side of the
metal solenoid is connected to manifold vacuum. The pictured valve
is opened(closed?) by manifold vacuum passed from the solenoid. Sorry
I can't offer better info.

No, not at all. You've been a great help and your information has allowed me to narrow things down.

I have my suspicions about the other two vacuum ports on the part, still hoping someone will come along and confirm those.

Thanks a lot,
Greg
