Hey volvo people, quick question - opinions of the group:
This March I'm moving to Germany. Does anyone know of any good salvage (pick-n-pulls) in germany or the E.U.? Are OEM/dealer volvo parts cheaper in sweden? I'm planning traveling around as much as I can, hopefully I'll make it up to Gothenburg.
.
Also, what would be a good part to salvage and bring back? I would love to have glass headlamps with wipers, any other parts ideas, stuff we didn't have as an option in the states? any insight would be a help. thanks!!

Parts: There are some mailorder/internet retailers in Germany. Generally you'll find them slightly more expensive than in the US; especially for light stuff it may make sense to order from FCP or any of the other discounters.
Pick'n'pulls: Check the German club website and german contacts. Remember that the EU generally, and Germany doubly so, is much more regulated so most dismantlers are full-service operations due to environmental and health&safety regs. You may find some good picking in Sweden, there's a big one somewhere near Gothenburg or Malmo or something. Ah, here it is: http://www.returbilen.se/
By the way, a "mil" (swedish mile) is 10km or about 6 miles.
Of course there are people like yours truly who can get their hands on a lot of stuff, both used and new.
Dealer parts: Europe-wide pricing has been pretty much standardized, but this might be a good chance for you to pick up some of those elusive euro-only parts, or maybe try to sweettalk a dealer into getting you a special deal.
E-code headlights, otherwise you guys generally got more goodies than we did. Blackline exterior trim if you like that kind of thing (I think the US kept the chrome trim 'till the end, didn't you?), if you're really lucky maybe a woodline dashboard trim. VX3 cam from an approx 93- 940?

Rhaire gave you good suggestions -- let me add:
(1) that regarding Euroheadlights, don't settle for anything less than genuine Volvo-Cibie OEM parts! I made the mistake of buying Euroheadlights from an exporter (one of the guys mentioned by Rhaire), and the "Scantron" Euroheadlights were and still are crap. Let me know you want a whole list -- and I mean a list -- you wouldn't believe how many different things can go wrong with just a set of headlights and parking lights! All quality-control issues! So don't settle for less than Volvo-Cibie brand!
(2) and if you've got a wagon with the third seat and you expect to haul kids (parties, soccer, etc.) in it (like I did, ableit 15-20 years ago), something that I wanted but couldn't get was an exhaust fan for its rear area. It can get stuffy back there, and there was an option available only in Europe -- a powered exhaust fan that fit in the air duct in the right rear fender, to boost the exhaust of the air there out of the outside vent.
Enjoy the visit to Gothenburg, too!

Do you have any idea if the US models were wired for those fans? It wouldn't be hard to pop a nice stout 12 volt fan in that duct :-)

I may be wrong (memory cloudy after so many years, ~20), but I remember that the duct was pretty narrow, maybe only a couple of inches. And I don't remember any wiring for it, but it wouldn't be hard to run a 12 volt wire (and ground it locally).
I think I forgot to mention that, as a solution for my car (and the comfort of the kids sitting back there), I just installed a small electric fan, the kind that used to sit on the dash of long-haul trucks before they, too, got air conditioned. Of course, it had *safe* plastic blades, perfectly safe! But it made it quite comfortable, as well as helped circulate the air conditioned (or heated) air up front back there as well.

I used to have one of those old trucks ( a Kenworth ) without airconditioning, I wonder why I never thought about popping one of those fans in ..... Maby I wasd trying to forget those days :-)

Yeah Euro lights for sure. Plenty of good guys and sources. Smits in the NL, van den Bergh in Belgium and more.

"...Also, what would be a good part to salvage and bring back? ..."
How about a Volvo 780 with a 16 Valve turbo and manual transmission.
