The rears are ATE, always, in an american 1984 240. 200 1984

There's a broad, crossed metal spring in the center that presses down on the pads, right? It's ATE. And even earlier than 240 cars with ATE brakes in the front, such as 164s, have that characteristic crossed metal spring (it's a feature of ATEs).

Girlings, in the front of all 240's, have wire springs, instead, to hold the pads.

I think what you're asking is are they ATE or Girling??

99% of the time, 240's are:
    Front: Girling
    Rear: ATE

I don't know if there are exceptions or what they are. If so, probably for some uncommon types like 6-cyl or Diesel or??

    How I remember:
    F-G (Front-Girling) and
    R-(s)-T (Rear-aTe)

It's hokey but it works for me.
