Early seat in '90 240? 200

Hello seat specialists,

Will the early seats (whose foam seems to hold up better) fit in a '90 244?

By early, I'm thinking of the ones from the early '80s.

Will the cover from the late seat fit the early one?? Our 90 has a black cloth interior, not too common, so I might need to swap the black cloth onto another seat.

We just acquired a maroon '90 244 with a seriously worn driver's seat. Both the back and bottom foam are damaged, and the frame may also have problems. We need to keep our costs and also my time to a minimum on this car (may not be keeping it) so I'm looking for the quickest + easiest way to get a good seat into it. The seat cover is not too bad, we could put it on a new seat.

Thanks for your help,
Sven's driver/maintainer

they are interchangeable..I don't know about the early 80's foam being better, though. I would get the newest possible. You sometimes see a passenger seat that looks new. Grab that foam and reuse your cover. Archives have detailed help.

From what I have seen the early foam is better. The seats are interchangeable the backrest covers are not so you can't exchange apolstery. From 1989 on, the 240 seat foam is different. It looks almost white compared to the dirty yellow color of the older foam. All of the white foam in my 89 was ripped. I rebuilt the seats with foam from an 87. In spite of it being older it is much firmer and holding up well.

        Thanks.
        This looks hopeful.

How about the really earlier ones like '83, '84? The cloth covers apparently don't interchange - but does the foam fit - if I find a nice one??

Yes, I've seen the two colors also.

        BTW,
I did a serious rebuild on the driver's seat in my '89 daily driver.
I put a hardware cloth mesh (like coarse-grain screening material) across the back frame to support the foam and keep it from self-destructing from pressure against the frame rails. I did swap in nice foam with only minor cracks that I glued with 3M Super 77 and reinforced thoroughly with denim jeans material. Feels better than new. A lot of work, though. You probably could do it quicker and easier with cloth or webbing across the frame, I saw a pic once. Not doing all that for this "new" '90 244.

        Thanks again!
