Fuel smell when engine running 1994, 960 900 1994

I have a 1994 960 with 185K and have kept it up with local dealer. However, when the car is running and you are riding behind it there is heavy fule smell. I have had the fuel system pressurized and tested, had the fuel rail replaced, the vent hose on the the tank at the fill nozel replaced, new fuel cap, new catilitic coverter ($900).
Could it have something to do with the charcoal cannister and catilitic coverter where the unburnt fuel is recirculated back into the catilitic converter. The service light is on...dealer told me to ignore..some thing to do with the sensor at the catilic converter.
The car burns no oil and doe not leak fuel or oil when parked.

Hi, I had the same smell and 12 to the gallon, after only the cat was changed. Then had to have both 02 sensors replaced. Now do about 30 to the gallon at 75mph on the motorways. Regards Keith

The local dealer sugested that I replace the air recirculation pump? something about it takes the exhust and recirculates back into the intake manafold.
Was going to be $500 to $ 600. Told him I could not afford and I guess because they have done alot of work for me, the guy looked at the pump, said he took it out, beat it on the ground and got some of the carbon out, and re installed and the oder was reduced greatly. I do not know how long this will last.

What is a O2 sensor and where is it located? Do you know where this re-seculating pump is located? and how it works?

      Jon

If the problem is being caused by a tear in the fuel filler neck hose, then you would smell the fumes in the cabin. Also, fuel would spill on the ground under the center of the rear axle when you fill up.

If the problem is being caused by a leaking fuel rail (common problem on this car), I would think you would still smell it in the cabin. But you've already replaced that.

I can't imagine what would cause a heavy fuel smell when riding behind the car. Are you assuming it's coming from the exhaust system in order to be noticable from behind the car?

    Bird,

Is the indicator light the "Service Engine" or the "Check Engine" (MIL) light?
If it's the service light that can be reset by removing the small rubber plug on in the transparent instrument cover and reset by pushing the rod covered by the plug in gently with a small Phillips screw driver, nail set, etc. This light comes on every 5K and is just a reminder to change the oil and perform other mantainence engine services. If it's the "Check" light that indicates something is tripping a OBD code. That requires some diagnostic attention. I can't recall if this can lead to fuel leakage or fumes but there were some posts on 960 gas filler line Y connector and line cracking on here on the Brick Board. You might run a search for that info. It may help you resolve this problem. Good Luck.

It sounds as though you have a rich running condition, which can result from coolant temperature sensor malfuntions, faulty fuel pressure regulator, intake air hose tears, intake manifold gasket leaks, etc. Time for some diagnostics, many of which you can do yourself over the weekend. Start with the FAQ.
