AS a recap I replaced the starter in my son's 240 to find that was not the problem. After jumping it it went 50 yards and died. We jumped it again and left the lights off and it made it the 30 minutes home. We thought the battery might be bad so we changed that out with a spare. On turning the key it fired to life. Next time nothing, not even a click. Battery reads 13 volts. Tomorrow I'll check the small wire that runs from the positive terminal.

I missed the original post. What symptom(s) lead you to suspect the starter?

    "Battery reads 13 volts."

Engine running or not? Should read 15.8v or thereabouts with the engine at idle.

If the wiring at the back of the alternator is intact, then you might be due for new brushes. I'm not sure whether an '80 has an external voltage regulator, or whether this is part and parcel of the alternator on your model. '83+ cars have a voltage regulator/brush set that attaches to the body of the alternator with a couple of screws and can be replaced in 15 minutes for about $60. On the other hand, you might have to do some soldering. An alternative is to have the alternator rebuilt by an automotive electrical shop. They can usually do this for $100 or less, depending on what needs to be done....in any event, much cheaper than a rebuilt Bosch alternator off the shelf.

Check your battery cables and all grounds.
