1990 b230ft into 1988 760t. What do I need to consider? 700

Hi,

Its been a while since I've visited the board here. The 960 still won't start.

I have a 1990 b230ft that I would like to put into my pristine 1988 764t that has a bad motor. Did the ignition change from the jetronic 2.2 to 2.4 during this time? If so will I be able to just swap the computer from the 1990 into the 88 car? Thanks,

Jes

P.S I just have to plug it, if you live around PA I have a white 89 745t for sale w/180k in nice shape. Asking $1200.

If the exhaust and turbo are intact on the '90 motor, you can use them for faster spoolup (or it might just be in better condition) - the cooling hoses will be a match. Use everything on the intake side, including the manifold, from the '88. The '90 uses LH 2.4 - different injectors, cold start valve not used on '88, idle air motor and coolant sensor need to stay with the car. In short...do it as though you are installing a bare long block from a rebuilder.

The other bolt-on crap doesn't matter. Replace worn accessory bushings while you have the goodies unbolted.

One more thought before you start this. >>IF<< your car does not have an updated wiring harness manufactured after 1989, this sure would be the time to replace it since it will need to be mostly disconnected for an engine swap.

Both the fuel and ign systems changed fro 89 to 90. Easiest swap would be to use the existing 88 systems and swap the engine wiring harness, temp sensor, fuel rail and distributor to the 90 motor

Thanks for your posts. I will be using an extra remanufactured turbo that I have w/the 90 motor and the intake business from the 88 motor on the 90 "block." Does the 1990 motor have the larger connecting rods? I wouldn't mind edgeing the boost up to about 12 or so.

'88 (not '89 as so many say) was a split year on the crankshaft thrust bearing location, #3 position early and #5 since mid-production. The info is straight out of Volvo's parts listing. All should have 13mm rods meaning '87 was supposed to be the end of 9mm rods.
